Suikoden, one of my favorite game series, began on the original PlayStation in 1995 in japan. The series came to North America later in 1996.
The series was created by Yoshitaka Murayama and borrows from the Chinese legend, Water Margin. Ever main series game has the player recruiting 108 heroes (or Stars of Destiny). This was a major factor for getting me into the series. I like large casts of characters like those found in Final Fantasy 6 and Vandal Hearts. It was a must buy for me.
We missed out on a few games in North America. However, the Genso Suikogaiden text adventure games have received fan translations and are now fully playable. I imported both entries. I have not fully played through Vol. 1 yet, but the series heavily expands on the characters found the early games.
Aside from the five main series entries, we also got Suikoden Tactics, which is closely tied to the fourth main entry, and Suikoden Tierkreis for the DS.
Suikoden is a series I recommend to RPG enthusiasts and Game of Thrones fans. These games are heavily political, you will be double-crossed, you will enjoy them, you will want more!
You're absolutely right, Suikoden is also one of (if not the) favorite RPG series of this kind.
I've actually been doing some "historical" gaming posts lately, covering noteworthy games released in certain years (just made two about 93 and 2000) and as a matter of fact I'm rocking Suikoden on my phone in a PS1 emulator right now!
