Sukkot Shopping in Hasidic Williamsburg

in sukkot •  7 years ago

I really enjoyed walking on Lee avenue, observing the hustle bustle of people shopping for the holiday. The streets were hectic, with the seller screaming prices loudly to attract buyers.
These Citrus fruits are one of the four species religious Jews utilize on the Sukkot. The value of the Esrog depends on whether the "pitam" (stigma) remains intact even after the natural growing process. After carefully inspecting the fruit, Hasidic men spend over $100 for the right citrus. They take special care of it, refrigerating it overnight wrapped in wet paper towels, and holding carefully it like it is made of fragile porcelain. In Shul (synagogue), young grooms often show off their Esrog in a dedicated silver box that their in laws have purchased for this occasion.
