"Summer in the South"

Summer in the south,
When the heat and the humidity are physical
Things.
Your thoughts
Hang up in your brain, your words hang
There in the air before you,
Before they then fall the ground
With an audible thud.
The heat,
If you must venture out in it,
Sucks your vitality and energy, so that you walk
Around like a zombie,
Trying your best to stay cool,
And to finish whatever task has forced you out
Into the furnace so you can retreat to some
Dark and cool place.

I try to limit my work
Outdoors to those times of day when
It is cooler, and
I don’t need a
Knife to cut the steam so I
Can find my way
To get anything done.

I have never experienced summer in the south, and I hope not to. Minnesota was humid enough for me, and here in Idaho we are enduring a streak of upper 80s and low 90s. I hide in my air conditioned living room!

I spent 7 yrs in Arizona during and just after my stint in the Air Force.
When I came back here, it was almost unbearable, and took me
Several years to get re-acclimated, if I ever really did. I can
Take the heat better than I can the cold, now that I am
Older, so what are we gonna do @scribblingramma?
We just have to keep moving forward and do
The best we can with the hand we are dealt.
Thanks for reading. I appreciate it muchly.
