I Tried Stand Up Paddle Boarding for the Very First Time Ever, You Would Never Believe What Happened!

Last weekend I went to the beach with my friends @mattandcristina to check out the surf. You can check out their latest Hawaii Blogs here: https://steemit.com/@mattandcristina (Check out their blog, please up-vote and follow them too!)

We were in search for surf on the south shore of Maui, so we got in the car and headed out to Makena side. We passed Makena Beach, all the way to Garbage Dumps, and to our surprise there was a new concrete parking lot! It seemed like a lot of action, so we walked down the A’A gravel trail until we could see the spot. There were two guys out waiting for waves, but no waves in sight!

We thought we saw waves at Ma'alaea Harbor on the way down the mountain, so we would check it out after a quick bite to eat. We decided to swing by the Monkeypod and see if my old friend Jason was working, however he was not there, and I had forgotten my wallet, so we picked up some sushi instead at Safeway. Since I had forgotten my wallet and they covered me at the store I told Matt and Cristina I would pay them back with some STEEM, and they said yes! This was exciting, this was actually my first STEEM purchase ever. A little bit of STEEM for some beer and sushi sounded like a good deal to me!

After lunch we got to the harbor, but the Break Wall was only a foot, so we decided to head back to the North shore and do some Paddle Boarding!

Wait a second, I thought, I have never paddle boarded in my life! I started to sweat a little as some fresh new panic that I had never felt before started to set in. I had never paddle boarded, or ever thought of paddle boarding, so I never felt the paddle board worry until now! However I decided to push the worry to the back of my mind and give it a try, what did I have to loose??

We got to the north shore, and Matt got the Starboard ready, he inflated it and helped get it into the water. Luckily I had the go-pro with me so I put it on and got video of my first time on a Stand Up Paddle Board. Here is the video below:

I got in the water with the giant boat like starboard and decided to give it a try. The first time I crawled up on the board, I slowly stood up and did a few paddles. However as soon as Matt got there and looked at me I fell off, and from the looks of the video, I might have swallowed a little bit of water! It was either the first time, or second attempt, but I remembered accidentally swallowing some salt water on a few of the falls, and after each time my balance progressively got worse. It was like being on a sea saw, sometimes I was up, the rest of the time I was down. At one point I started to break out in uncontrollable laughter. I don’t know if it was the beer and sushi, the accidental gulps of saltwater, or the fact that I was so happy because STEEM was rocketing up all the time, or maybe it was just the combination! All I remember was going into laughing fits, and I remember having a hard time pulling it together.

I just kept trying though, and eventually I pulled it together to get a few ten seconds of good paddling in here and there. And you know what that was good for? I will tell you…

The answer is SEASICKNESS… I had just fallen off the board about 20 times, and the last time I was standing I felt a turning in my stomach. I did not feel so good anymore. I went from early morning steem highs to sea scurvy sea sickness in a matter of one session on the SUP! Finally on the way in I realized what was the matter, I was getting sea sick. By the time we got out of the water, I was a wreck. I was sweating, cold sweats in the sun, blurry vision, and I still felt like I was going up and down after I got out of the water. It was official, I announced to Matt and Cristina, I am Seasick!

I watched the shock in their eyes drop down like their eyelids were scratching their heads in disbelief! But yes it was true, I was seasick!

When I asked earlier about paddle boarding, what could I loose, I thought I was being rhetorical in my mind, however it turns out there was a real answer to that question. On the way home up the hill, on the way up Baldwin avenue I had to tell Matt and Cristina to pull the car over really quick, I was about to loose my sushi and Beer, oh my! It was the first leg in my seasickness, puking, before the dry heaves, and the headache. When I got home I had dry heaves and went straight for a nap. After the nap I still was not doing so good, I tried to eat some yogurt, but could not hold anything down, so I just went to bed early, a little after 8, and slept the whole seasickness off.

Luckily I woke up in the morning I was fine. I felt 100 % refreshed, no more seasickness. I still could not believe that I got seasick trying to stand up paddle, but I am not surprised because I used to get sick on boat rides around the islands when I was younger, but Dramamine used to help. Even though I got sick I still think I will try it again, except next time I will definitely take a Dramamine, and not eat sushi and drink any beers before!
