A Complaint Letter to a Perfect Superhero

Date: 21st January 2020
To: My Perfect Superhero,

Dear, My Hero,

You have always been there for me, when nobody else does. You’re the one who will stand by me, throughout my ups and downs in life. You’re my saviour. The one who will go out to buy the stuffs that I need for school a few minutes before the shop is closing because I always forget to inform you earlier. You’re my protector. The one who will walk me to the front school gate with an umbrella, making sure not a single raindrop touches me. You’re my provider. The one who makes sure I get everything that I want and wish for. Growing up, I always look up to you; your fearless heart, your diligences, your selflessness, your kindness, your thoughtfulness and the list goes on. I perceived you as a perfect creature.

However, you never once told me about your worries, feelings, problems and struggles. You’re always looking as daring as ever. I still remember the day TokMak passed away, 6 years ago. We were on our way to school, like usual, and then suddenly your mobile phone rang. You got the news about the death of the woman who carried you for 9 months and 10 days, the woman who brought you to life, the woman whom you treasured the most in life. However, what came out from your mouth after hearing the news surprised me. With a calm voice, you replied “Innalillah… okay, I will be heading there as soon as possible”. Right after the phone call ended, I asked you what happened and you explained it to me, again; with that exact same voice tone. I began to cry and looked into your eyes. Not a single tears found. Do you remember after that phone call, we almost got into a car accident? You almost hit the car in front of us, which was very unlike you. You were not in the right state of mind. You lost focus in driving. I bet it was because of the sudden news. It did affect you greatly, but you didn’t show it to me. Remember when we visited her grave, last year? You were busy taking off the wild grass that grew on her grave as your mouth was busy reciting the prayer. I knew you miss her so much. I knew you made yourself busy so that you wouldn’t have to deal with your sad emotions. I knew you tried so hard not to burst into tears. I knew you miss having someone whom you could rely on, share your feelings and problems with, without getting any judgments.

Therefore, I’m writing this letter to make a complaint regarding your lack of complaints towards me, your first-born child. This year, your first-born child will turn 21 years old which makes her no longer a child. She turns into an adult now. She is more mature and understands the world even better than when she was a child. She wants to know how your day is, what bothers your mind, your thoughts and inner feelings and how it feels like to be in your shoes. Although, sharing those won’t solve anything, but at least it’ll make you feel relieved in a way because the burden that you have been carried all alone all these years, has been shared. She wants to dive deeper into your life, not just grounding to a halt where the water shallowed. She wants you to be more voice about yourself. You don’t have to worry because feeling unhappy and having problems are normal and you will always be my perfect superhero, dad…

With love,
Your first-born child.

Note: TokMak is a Malay nickname for grandmother.
