Some time ago I attended a pattern workshop at London’s Brick Lane, a street known for its vintage shops, art galleries, Indian restaurants and weekly flea markets. For anyone unfamiliar with the subject, surface patterns can be any type of repeating pattern, placement print or illustration that is used to decorate for instance fabric, wallpaper, ceramics and stationery. The workshop was led by husband and wife design team Chris and Suzanne Carpenter and after a short introduction and exploration of pattern in its many shapes and forms, it was hands on!
The main idea was to playfully explore mark-making with simple tools and techniques without a particular end goal in mind. It was a lot of fun to freely stamp, cut and glue without having to end up at a point where anything should be labelled ‘design’. I will definitely be aiming to incorporate more playfulness and ‘accidents’ in my work – the kind you just can’t come up without doing, experimenting and, inevitably, messing up.
