My 8yo Son Caught His First Wave Today!

in surfing •  7 years ago

After sailing yesterday, we spent today at the beach I grew up at and my eight-year-old son Devon caught his first wave!

My brother Tod was teaching him while I got to enjoy some waves on my own board which he's been keeping for me here in Huntington Beach, CA. I didn't get any pictures of me surfing, but this is my happy face after surfing:

The kids had fun playing in the sand:

Corinne had fun hanging out on the beach as well:

My brother Tod is so great with the kids. They loved playing with him.

The sunset at the end of the day was breathtaking.

I've had such a great vacation so far. I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season as well.

Beautiful fun time with family! My love to the cute kids.

Thanks! We're having a great time.

Look dad no wetsuit!

Hey Jessica! I didn't know you were on Steemit! Next time you post, ping me so I can send you an upvote.

He was pretty cold and asking about how much wetsuits cost. He's pretty excited about his early surfing success.

Wow, congratulations! I had to resteem this right away ;-)
The posture of your little one looks pretty professional, but that actually doesn't surprise me much having seen you surfing in Lisbon :-)
If they start so early, they have the opportunity to become very very good at an older age. Well done, daddy!

Enjoy the last days of 2017 and have a brilliant start into 2018!!

Thanks Marly! He had an amazing time and is really excited to keep going. Too bad we live in Nashville. Hopefully we'll be traveling more to places he can surf. Right now we're in Oxnard/Ventura, it he's already asking when we can get back in the water when we had back to Huntington Beach.

@lukestokes Happy Holidays! The crypto world never sleeps but we need to take some time to rest. California is a magic place with so many places to visit, deserts, oceans, and so on.

By the way, I really appreciate your support yesterday with the 1st chapter of the Full Steemit Guide to help new visitors, new members, minnows and other steemians make their way easier on the platform. You and @blocktrades deserve more than simple thanks. You really care about the platform and the steem blockchain and do everything you can to help everyone here.

I just published Chapter 2, and this one has a special thing you created together with Pablo Yabo. I believe many more steemians will benefit from it on this new post, because its tru what you say. How can you manage and remember each boughts, sells and the USD and BTC price at that times, things are so fast. So, excellent idea. Thanks for that great contribution too.

Here is the link to chapter 2 in case you would like to take a look:https://steemit.com/steem/@gold84/chapter-2-of-11-focusing-on-the-details-of-the-steem-wallet-to-learn-as-much-as-possible-how-to-use-it-transfer-steem-sbd

Looking forward to hear from you soon, and your thoughts on this new chapter.

Regards, @gold84

Thanks for putting out some great, helpful content.

@lukestokes you @blocktrades, @timcliff , @elear , @aggroed , @jesta all of you in the panel held by @aggroed have inspired me even more to continue doing this, looking for ways to help new people here. They will be the path to spread the word on the platform, more collaboration will extend here, and this together with all the developments going on in the blockchain, will turn steem, bitshares unstopable.

By the way, smartcash has gone up like crazy. Your posts on that one were great for me too.

One thing I wanted to ask you. Did you see the way to use vessel created by @jesta , to get a direct link to vote as a witness. I really have had travel to make some upvotes for witness. I want to give you a vote and @blocktrades too, as well as others that are really making big contributions here.

Hope to continue hearing from you, and I am really gald this posts are getting on the hands of new people on steemit and it is clarifying things for them, they are asking questions. I am trying to answer them the best I can.

Regards, @gold84

Look @lukestokes love is important in a family relationship but I also add the values we give at home to our children, for example. If you drink liquor you will not have the moral to call your attention when a child does, if you use drugs the same thing will never be used to tell you not to use drugs, that's why values are important and what you do is create values in the home, that is to go on the right track, I will follow you and I will be aware of what you post to support you with my votes, happy afternoon

Awesome, what a beautiful family ...@lukestokes , keep it up and I wish you all a blessed holiday season and more success in 2018.

In my latest post (pls see it) I indicated an abuse going on here (I mentioned you there ) and I want you to see it and take action. I wish you more success

I saw it, thanks.

Awesome that Devon already started surfing with 8 years.
I‘m 22 and didn‘t arrange yet to start..
But I intend to try It out in summer 2018.
Already looking forward to it!

My cousin does kitesurfing for years now and I will go with him next time. Excited :)

@lukestokes I also wanted to say on this way that I like you appearance on steemit as a Content creator (Love your Posts) as well as your work as a witness.
So recently I voted for you and I hope many others will do the same

Sent you this little message in your wallet yesterday to.
Have a good time with your family :)

I'd love to learn how to kite surf someday! I'm bring my wetsuit home to TN and maybe I'll figure out if there's a way to do that on the lake when it gets windy.

Thanks for your support. :)

Yeah I think for someone who already knows how to surf, kitesurfing won't become the big problem.
Of course it is not the same and there are different muscles required, but as everything it is a thing of exercising.
I definitely want to try out both sports.

You're welcome! :)

Great beginning dear @lukestokes let him go a head and keep going

Looks like a great day. Those mermaid photos are perfect :D

Excellent I have prayed for your child so that he can do great things in the future. I am congratulating him for his first job for your 8-year-old child and I love to love from the heart. I wish you all the successes that you have today, successful and beautiful, all the pictures are beautiful It seems like many beautiful pictures have taken your post Ray you set postai

Thank you.

That surfing feeling is amazing, i got to experience it again as well after a really long time and i thing my smile might have been a bit wider then yours (not sure though)

Its hard to get good action shots
But good to get your kids in the water and be with family

Yeah, I'm really glad Corinne got that shot. It's one we'll remember for a very long time.

your child is very beautiful

Oohhhh @lukestokes grettings for your surfer son!

Thansk for sharing this awesome pics.

very clever children, can you help my voting @taniaart

Great post! I am from San Diego, so it is exciting to see other steemians so close! I too have been enjoying the beach recently! Hope you continue to enjoy the end of the year! :)

Very cool! San Diego's really nice, but I mostly remember just driving through it on the way to k38 to surf in Mexico.

I love the photos; it shows family love. Hope to have a lovely family like this someday.

It's one of the best things in the world!

How lovely is that.

My son is all grown and my family splintered :(

Your post is everyday special.

Happy days throughout 2018 and beyond.

xox

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you create opportunities to reconnect with them.

One day I will learn surfing and it will be a successful game registered in Uganda and Olympics will award me

Hahah. Nice. I'd love to see more wave pools around the world so anyone can surf anywhere.

Really outstanding and lovely photography. @lukestokes I would like to share my own photography with you. https://steemit.com/photography/@irshadhussain/original-photography-of-my-hometown-kachai

I’m jealous Luke. This is what I’m seeing. Oh crap I can’t add a photo easily to a comment! [posting so I can add, while smoking outside in like 20 degree Buffalo...] a horrible pic but one of mad contrast with Cali weather.

Wauhhh..... Great moment with the family. Having a moment with the children it's a family duty. Having fun should be part of their as it's one of the things that keep them healthier

It's what makes life fantastic. :)

no matter how many times I refreshed the page, some photos refused to come up. I wasn't able to see your happy face after surfing, but I was able to see a really authentic mermaid and your brother Tod :D I am sure you must be proud of your son, I think these things are what makes a father happy !

Edit: This is so strange, I found out why some images were not shown, not even profile pictures. The antivirus was blocking them. I don't understand why it was seeing them as phishing attempt. Now I can see your happy face after surfing :)

Huh. Glad you got it working again. Odd.

I wasn't expecting you to see my comment and reply to it after so many hours, especially knowing your activity and how busy you are here. Thank you for that, I appreciate it! I wasn't expecting either that you would reply on this comment of mine :)

In Slovenia we had had not any snow for Christmas. Good to you to have at least a lot sun in California.

Happy next year full of steem for all!!

The kids like cold if there's snow. Otherwise, they don't like it at all. Me? I prefer the sun. :)

I like snow in mountains as an ex climber, this is, from my point of view, the right location for snow.
I never try tour skying. I have to do once!

I remember catching my first wave :) I was much older than your son though. Still can't forget the rush!

It's one of the best feelings in the world!

You have a great family. Enjoy your family bonding time!

Looks really good!! I also want to the surfing but there is no place to sufe in Korea.. you are so lucky I think!! Haha I’ a new steemer!! I will visit you sometimes!! Why dont you be my page? Haha now Im studying english so I’m try to write my post by english and korean.. you jusy come to my page and read posts plaease!! Have a nice day with your sweet family!! :)

Maybe this post will help you. Begging for people to come to your page isn't very helpful.

Wow. Beautiful post indeed. Your daughter in mermaid attire looks soo adorable :-) . God bless the family. Its great to spend quality time with your near and dear ones. Regards Nainaz.
#thealliance

Thank you. :) Yeah, we had a great day.

@lukestokes - Devon seems to be a quick learner. Catching the first wave well is an awesome experience. I remember when I did my first wave ( I was way over 8 years old) and it ended up with sand in my mouth (and lots of other places on my body) and sea water in my eyes!
Your daughter looks like a real cute mermaid there.
I am glad that you got this time off to spend it with family, doing something you all enjoy. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted

Regards,

@vm2904

Thanks. :) We've been having a great time. There's nothing quite like surfing.

Wow! That's great - especially in that age! Seems like you had a great day at the beach with the whole family! :)

@lukestokes congratz to your little one!
Great my one get her first baby wave at portugal in a lagoon. Water came in and gave her the right push!
Awesome moments!!!
Thanks @lichtblick for this resteem! Lovely post! Upvotet! His put to you guys!

So cool! I hope to travel with the family much more to places we can surf. :)

Wow,i know he feels proud of himself for the achievement

He can't wait to get back in the water!

this is such a great moment to be captured.
i do agree that children need to learn by doing, that is much more effective especially for there characters.
your family look so lovely, and that loves you give to them will make them lovely personality too.

I sure hope so. We have our share of challenges just like anyone, but we do have a lot of love too.

Nice one :) It’s fantastic to share those first times with the kids!

Congratulations to Devon for the first wave. Time spent with loved ones is the most beautiful time. Beautiful photos and memorys.

There's nothing better. :)

Woooow! Professional photographer, I like it so much,Thanks For sharing such things.

Looks like a pro already, Happy to know a good man and a Dad!

Thanks to Steemit!

Wow .. wonderful pictures
The children amid sand and water are very beautiful
I wish you happiness dear

Thank you so much.

So good to see you having fun in the sun with your lovely family. A true American role model!
You make me want to start a family of my own one day. Travel Pro Junior? ha ha
Happy New Year! -Dan

Travel Pro Junior sounds like a plan!

This is so awesome! I remember when I caught my first wave only half a year ago. It was the best feeling ever! :-)

Nice! It really is an amazing feeling. I miss living by the water.

Yeah, it's so nice! Where'd you live?

No need to flag just a proud dad sharing a pic :)

That is actually pretty awesome my 6 month old daughter just crawled for the first time today. Funny how little humans can change the hard heart of a warrior into mush and make you appreciate things you would of totally dismissed at an earlier point in your life. It's actually quite profound how something that has only been on the planet for 6 months can make you reevaluate the purpose you have lived the last 40 years or so for.

Congrats on your new found purpose and meaning. :)

Thanks, started late in life, but going to make the best of this new role. She has one of those wheeled walker things and follows me around the house like a dog. It's actually very neat. I'm typically an unemotional, cynical, hard ass former Marine bittered by lifes past hurts. She does much to make me see the other values of life. Thanks for the comment.

That's so cool! He's a natural! And I see you have a cute little mermaid in the family! Lucky you! Such a nice post!

Thank you. We had a great day.

That is so awesome! You should be very proud! And what a way to spend the day. It's 1 degree here. LOL

I'm jealous... but more happy for you.

Ah! Wow. Yeah, it's pretty cold back in Nashville as well. I'm glad to not be there right now. :)

That is awesome brotha I remember when I went to Huntington Beach back in 2011 it was amazing.. I'm from Oklahoma and always wanted to live in Huntington Beach actually, and my wife had family there so it was perfect!
Good to see your son catch his first wave that's awesome he looks like a natural!!

I love it, but it has changed quite a bit. It's a lot more commercialized and modernized now, but it still feels like home in many ways, especially when I'm out in the water.

Those precious moments will stay with them forever 😊 I wish I could surf, it looks like such a fun sport! Have a good start into the new year.

Thank you! Yeah, it takes quite a bit to learn it. I'm quite thankful my father taught me at an early age.

your kids are veru adorable.
and your kids are very lucky they arr living my childhood dream.

Thank you!

beautiful socal! hey @lukestokes i'm also in socal--corona, ca. i'm new on here and really liking steem's potential. do you mind a meetup so i can learn more about steem from you? i'll come down to hb

Nice! We're going back and forth between Oxnard and HB visiting with family, so I don't think I'll be able to squeeze in any meetups on this trip. I've been having trouble making time for friends I haven't seen in years. This post may help though: #SteemitIsToMe: Relationships, Reputation, and Rewards

Looks like a great day at the beach! It's 8F degrees over here...

8 years old and surfin' like a pro already!

8F... brrr.

Corinne just showed me the weather report for our home in Nashville and one day this week it gets down to 7F. It's crazy. So glad to be here right now.

It could be worse... my little brother @bryanjagoe is working a chairlift up at Jay Peak in Vermont. Yesterday they shut down the mountain due to the -55F windchill...

Perfect.

Awesome moment for a father to observe and capture. The big smiles are understandable. Hope you all had a great time enjoying the sunshine.

We did. It was a fantastic day.

nice post

That definitely look like a fun vacation. I saw part of your video on the boat too! It definitely makes me want to get closer to the tropics.

Yeah, me too. The weather this week in Nashville is terrible. I'm very glad not to be there. :)

Great post there, keep up good work !

Family is everything. Keep this safe forever. By the way, it's snowing here. Enjoy the Sea :)

I'm quite glad to be avoiding the cold right now. :)

Isn't the beach the best. Very cool that you had such a great time with the family. Mad props for Devon to ride the waves, I know I can't ride a single drop. Love the mermaids tails. Enjoy your the rest of your holiday. Cheers.

Thanks so much. Yeah, he keeps showing everyone he can the photo. He can't wait to get back in the water.

You have a nice family. Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi @lukestroke you guys caught all the fun in the world. Keep enjoying yourselves

nice enjoy , brilliant boy

Hey Luke. I just crossed over 750 followers and have decided to commit to going full time steemit travel blogger. I just did a post about my experience as well as thanking those who've helped and befriended me along the way. You're #1 on my thank you list! Here's the post if you have time to check it out.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@world-travel-pro/world-travel-pro-hits-750-followers-and-turns-full-time-steemit-travel-blogger-a-special-thank-you-to-my-steemit-friends

Happy New Year! -Dan

Hey Dan. I'll check it out. For the last year and half, every time someone has said, "I'm going to do Steemit full time!" I've strongly encouraged against it. This isn't a stable place to do that. All your support could go away at any moment and then what will you end up doing? I'd strongly suggest having alternative income sources. You could have your blogged flagged by a whale at any time (happened to me many times) so you really can't trust things will always be like they are now.

That has crossed my mind more than once. That is why I'm really trying to make hay while the sun shines. To be totally honest, so much has to do with you keeping me on your bot, and several others. I hope you're not implying you plan on dropping me. That would totally knock me down a big notch or two.

Since you added me, I've not only benefited financially, I've become way more visible on the platform attracting people that sincerely value my info and post and follow me everyday, it has really gotten the ball rolling for me. I sincerely can't thank you enough.

How I am thanking you is by taking in a couple minnows of my own and up-votting them how you have done for me. Hence spreading the steemit joy, and helping grow the platform from the example you have set. You'd be surprised how many quality newbies are out there, that are thrilled to get a 17 cent up-vote from me. I'm doing all I can to respect the help you've given me by helping others too now.

All that you said I take very seriously. And I certainly don't hope I get flagged or what have you... Fortunately if it does happen I can always fall back on teaching english from skype like I'm currently doing as well. But the money is not like steemit especially since the value went way up. It's unreal seeing some people now making a 1000 dollars a post or more day after day, when just two month's ago it was 200 dollars which is still fantastic.

Where this leads I don't know, but I hope you can't blame me for trying to strike while the iron is hot! I plan on diversifying into physical gold and silver and other cryptos but will atleast reinvest 50% back into steem power with hopes to be a much bigger member on the platform. How is that compared to quitting 4 months ago! lol So glad I stayed! Any advice on how to invest I'm all ears. Thanks again for your advice and support. I certainly hope things just keep getting better like they have. Wishing the best to you and your family! -Dan

To be totally honest, so much has to do with you keeping me on your bot, and several others. I hope you're not implying you plan on dropping me. That would totally knock me down a big notch or two.

The point is that Steemit is out of your control. I may not vote up the same people forever, so counting on my votes for your survival and prosperity isn't a great plan (IMO). When you have a job or start a business, you have much more control over your own success. That's why I caution people against treating Steemit like a full-time gig. Yes, the iron is hot, but it can easily go cold again.

Either way, good luck. If I do end up changing my voting around in the future, it's not personal, though I currently don't have plans to do so.

Totally understood and I always take your advice seriously; however next time you are changing things up in your bot just remember I'm super appreciative to be on it and I've put A LOT of effort into continually improving the quality of my blog for myself, my viewers, and steemit in general. Your support and inspiration has been a key part in that motivation. I've come a long way since almost quitting as you know.

For example take a look at this recent post full of incredible photos of the New Years Manigotes in Guayaquil. I bet your kids would love this!

https://steemit.com/travel/@world-travel-pro/travel-pro-art-4-new-year-s-manigotes-in-guayaquil-ecuador-part-one-13-photos

Thank you for being so real with your advice and for the support you have thrown my way. No need to reply to this message, I know how busy you are.

On a lighter note; you have a great New Year's Eve with your lovely family! I'm looking forward to thanking you in person at the next steemfest as you've truly changed my life by keeping me on the platform and helping me along here. Wishing you an incredible 2018! -Dan

What a joy you show :-) soo nice to see, your boy has got a good pose on that plank. I never have been able to even try that, and now with all the replaced bodyparts i wont do it anymore either :-) Jelous at your weather, here we have wet drops that want to be snow. Means it does not stay, wet and dirty. But the fun is inside the family feelings ever so warm, enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Thanks. :)

Such a nice adventurous family! :)

So happy to see you raising surfers...

If only I had begun surfing earlier in my life, I might have gotten my children involved. By the time I did begin surfing, they were at the age where it was no longer cool to do what dad did... :(

I've had better success with grandchildren, getting them to the beach from an early age. My granddaughter has been doing fairly well on a surfboard this past summer. I hope she'll keep it up.

Congratulations to you and your son on his first wave! :D

😄😇😄

@creatr

Surfing is a beautiful thing when you learn at an early age. Much harder to learn later, I think.

Surfing is a beautiful thing no matter how long it takes to learn. It took me more than a month to learn to stand, and I would do it all over again because the payoff is so great:

Learning To Stand - A True Surfing Story

The Surfing shelf in my library is the largest one of all:

Table of Contents

Unfortunately, recent changes in the Steemit interface have broken the links there for mysterious reasons, but I need to rework and update the entire library anyhow... Even so, if you look at any link itself and remove the "extra" https// that has been jammed in, you can still find the articles... ;)

I hope your son goes on to surf a lot. Even though you're landlocked, you could build your own wave in the back yard? ;) I have some ideas and designs for that if you're interested... ;)

Adorable mermaids! What an incredible time with family at the place where you grew up. I love how you introduced yourself as a father and husband on Steemit. It indicates how much family means to you. These posts do that too. God bless the family!

surfing is really fun..at 37 had my taste at surfing at Baler , Aurora Province in the Philippines...feeling so grateful for this rare oppurtunity ..so happy my 65 year old father and my 61 year old mother give it a try ...try Baler, Aurora Philippines

Well this post really hit home for me because I’m from Huntington Beach! Glad you all had fun and I hope you had the opportunity to eat at Fred’s, Sushi on fire ornPancake House!

Like a champ!! Million miles better than XRP ride! :)

It amazing fhotos.
Everybody love family. It will be always happy and it beautiful family..

I see you plagiarized and then deleted it. That's disgraceful. Go somewhere else and waste other people's time and attention.
