Hello @imperialaussie, sorry for the late reply.
Learning to use your arms is the next step, once you are already understanding the importance of looking where you are going.
*Looking at where we are going allows us to unlock the shoulders and the rest of the body throughout the turning (carving or snaps).
Surf is balance, but also Speed !!! And sometimes you have to generate your own impulse to generate speed or just to complete a maneuver due the weak potencional energy of the wave. Hence it is so important to realize the importance of controlling the arms to your benefit. If not, the arms will be a creator of chaos and will create instability and lead to loss of speed and balance. And downstream unbalance the coherence between the heart and brain. In other words, frustration abates on us.
To learn how to generate speed, you should start to practicing with Carver training.
Key point to keep in mind in training:
In the APEX moment -Lift both arms up to face level only.
To pump, you should start from a lower position (chest on the front knee) and then explode using your arms to generate momentum.
Remember that the arms should be parallel with the surfboard stringer to be sure all the momentum's direction is in the direction of travel.
“throwing” yourself along the wave as forcefully as possible. You do this by straightening your body and lifting both arms up to face level in the direction of travel.
This will un-weight the surfboard, allowing it to lift up and accelerate rapidly across the wave-face." Martin Dunn
If you are doing well the movement your legs should start to burn. lol !!
Good luck
