Discover Salvator Dali's Bizarre Recipes and Dinner Parties

in surrealism •  8 years ago

The awesome people at Taschen are making Dali's surreal cookbook available again after 43 years! There are only 400 copies of the original one in circulation, which usually sell for hundreds of dollars. So a re-print comes as a nice surprise to us Dali fans! The book is filled with half-serious artwork devoted to the food, with a focus on aphrodisiacs.

This book is a masterpiece of surrealism and shows how easily Dali could cross the bounderies of medium. He moves from his surreal art and applies it to bizarre food recipes in one fluid motion. Dali was well known for his bizarre and extravagant dinner parties. Food was a means of expression and life for him. He detested the 'calorie counters', food was only about taste for him. He also had a well-known hatred towards leafy greens, he is known for this most amazing of quotes: "Spinach is shapeless, like liberty. I only eat wat has clear intelligeble form."

Here's a video from 1941 that shows how bizzare and surreal it got there!

Monkeys running around, people dressed as horses, food in shoes, and a plate of live frogs. Nothing is too weird for the master of surrealism. So what happens when this same person creates a cookbook? Well, you get stuff like this:

You can pre-order the hardcover book on amazon right here

Enjoy!

Very interesting indeed!

I write a regular series on Steemit about subcultures and he very first subculture I featured was the microdosing subculture, where people microdose psychedelics to achieve something similar to Bradley Cooper in the movie Limitless. When I see Dali's dinner parties, it gives a sense of taking a full dose,,walking into one of his paintings and having Dali behave almost as Willy Wonka.

I have upvoted this piece and featured it on my hidden gems blog. Awesome piece.
