An incapacitating event (accident | fall | breakdown | lost) can plunge you into an entirely new set of priorities. Essentially, once the situation changes, the clock is ticking and its you against the elements!

That's a really important point. One thing a lifetime of city living does, it tilts you towards being foolhardy. Case in point: those "extreme adventure" blokes. It's not terribly hard to be "extreme" when you know there's a medevac copter waiting to pick you up if you get injured.

But what if there isn't any?

People who've assimilated this possibility - like rural folks who are used to living far away from government services - have a saving caution. To use your word, they're the opposite of complacent.

Yes conditions and the situation can change. Even if I’m hiking on a hot summers day I have a warm hat, gloves, fleece and shamagh in my pack at pretty much all times. I always think what if I have to spend the night.
