Bondi Sushi Bar has opened at 2052 Broadway between 70th and 71st Streets. The menu has a special item to celebrate the opening – $5 lobster maki rolls – available only through this weekend. “The Upper West Side is such an underserved market when it comes to high quality, affordable sushi. After just two days, the consumer reception for our sushi bar, takeout and delivery is stronger than we could have imagined,” said co-founders David Hess and Aiden Carty. The space, which has a 12-seat sushi bar and a takeout/delivery area, is open from 11am to 10pm. Bondi opened its first restaurant in 2017 and now has several across the city, including on the Upper East Side, NoMad, Nolita, and Tribeca. The new UWS location replaces the soap shop Sabon.
NYC Barber Shop & Museum on Columbus Avenue between 73rd and 74th Streets – recognizable from the outside by its portraits of celebrities getting a trim – has closed and moved some of its antiques to the existing Reamir & Co. barber shop at 303 Columbus (74th-75th), which is under the same ownership. Arthur Rubinoff, a fourth generation barber, has been collecting barber memorabilia for over 25 years. He opened the Museum, a 501c3 nonprofit, in 2018 to honor this family tradition. 303 Columbus is smaller than the Museum space so it will only feature a portion of the collection, which has artifacts from the past century. Barbers were the original surgeons, Rubinoff told WSR, which is linked to the origins of red, white, and blue barber poles.
Medical Offices of Manhattan is now open at 112 West 72nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. The practice offers primary care and many types of lab testing and is open on weekdays (8:00am to 6:00pm) and the first Saturday of each month. Appointments can be booked online on the website. The UWS location has two primary care physicians, a gastroenterologist, a nurse practitioner and a physician’s assistant. The Medical Offices of Manhattan has other locations at Columbus Circle, on the Upper East Side, and in Midtown East.
Soul Dental, a practice for cosmetic, family, and pediatric dentistry, is opening at 269 Amsterdam between 72nd and 73rd Street in the spring of 2023. Soul was founded by Drs. Yuliya Alterman and Alexandra Yungelson, who met on their first day of dental school at NYU College of Dentistry. They have two other offices in NYC. The new UWS location replaces Paper House, the stationery and party goods store that recently moved a block north.
Bond Vet, a primary and urgent care center for pets, is opening two new locations: 2875 Broadway at 112th Street and 2461 Broadway at 91st Street. Bond Vet’s existing office on the UWS, at 352 Amsterdam Avenue at 77th Street, opened in April 2020. At that time a representative told WSR they were lucky that construction was well underway before the pandemic began. Bond Vet originated in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, in 2019 and has grown quickly, adding many locations throughout Manhattan (Upper East Side, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea), as well as in Astoria, D.C., Boston, and Long Island. Bond Vet is a full-service veterinary clinic, offering routine care, emergency care, vaccines, spay/neuter, dental cleanings, and surgeries. Bond Vet also offers telehealth appointments.
