Billionaire heiress Clare Bronfman was indicted on racketeering charges connected to her involvement as operations director for the NXIVM cult. This is the same cult that Allison Mack and Keith Raniere were exposed earlier this year. What is somewhat surprising is that Bronfman is the heir to the multi billion Edgar Bronfman whom was formally the head of Seagram. This maybe the first of the indictments identifying corrupt activities among the rich and famous.
Others indictments handed out to people involved in the NXIVM cult were Nancy Salzman, Lauren Salzman and Kathy Russell. The charge was racketeering. In regards to this cult, FBI Assistant Director, William Sweeney provide this statement.
“As alleged, this long-running conspiracy crossed multiple avenues of criminal activity, which included, among other things, electronic monitoring; identity theft; extortion; victim smuggling; and illegal trafficking of a victim after a period of unlawful confinement.”
Bronfman was not accused of sex trafficking as were Raniere and Mack. It was reported that Seagram's heiresses, Sara and Clare Bronfman, were a major source of the cult's funding. It is estimated that over $150 million came from the Seagram's trust fund.
