There was an article in news.com.au by Kirrily Schwarz that "Should Australia have a population of 15 million?" This suggested that the government should be using Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI). This method includes what GDP calculations excludes, and currently shows that Australia's population of 24.1 million are much worse off then if it was at 15 Million people.
