McAfee is Malware! (Or it can be at least) - sysadmin rantsteemCreated with Sketch.

I'm a big proponent of work smarter not harder in my profession. I hate doing the same thing twice if I am able to automate the process.

It's a hell of a thing when you are trying to patch multiple systems remotely (installing security updates) and find out you're blocked by the friendly neighborhood host based "security" software.

Admittedly, I am being a bit over the top. McAfee isn't all that bad. It does have the potential to prevent intrusions for sure but MUST be properly tuned for the environment... but in the hypothetical situation, it's working in a manner that is counter to security.

"McAfee is malware" is a meme in the IT community but not exclusively to that community. I mean the famous John McAfee even realized a tongue-in-cheek video about the difficulty said software can cause the end-user particularly in it's removal. (And don't get me started on resource utilization.)

When you're a sysadmin managing hundreds of system, automation isn't simply a nice-to-have. It's a necessity. Good security is a must with today's critical data networks but there needs to be a trade off with availability, functionality and internal capabilities (i.e. automated patching)

Requiring interactive logon for applying updates is NOT a scalable solution. /RANT

In other news, going to try capturing the SFR token process once more on this post but this time with Snagit so I can capture the keychain operations. I hope to get the Utopian post finished early this week. Thanks!

Almost forgot to mention, this meme I created was originally shared on:

I never understood why Mcafee was so popular in business environments. It continuously performs poorly in the AV Comparitives tests in real-world tests.

To most businesses, buying anti-virus is not much different than buying plastic sporks for your kitchen.

Me neither.

I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say somewhere around half the issues I are caused by HBSS.

I'm not entirely sure if the issue is the software or incompetence, though.

I posted the meme on Imgur and heard a story about a DAT (5958) file that due to a false positive deleted a critical system file (svchost.exe)

Wonder if anybody got fired for that doozy.
