Tallinn, Day 2

in tallinn •  5 years ago  (edited)

On the second day of our trip, we went to see the lower and larger part of the old town. The stories and the photos are in chronological order. I would say the best photos are the last. When my family went back to the hotel before sunset, I stayed in the old town and went to the viewing platforms of Toompea Hill with my camera and my tripod to take some long exposures.

We're approaching Niguliste church and the town square from the south.

The town square is a head. You can see the Puha Vaimu (Holy Spirit) church in the distance.

This farmacy has operated continuously from 1422! It has the longest uninterrupted history of all pharmacies in the world. It's also a museum.

The clock was on the wall because it would've been impractical to have it up in the tower. Too many buildings too close to teach other. Good call. :)

At this point, my family went back to the hotel. I stayed because it was about half past five pm and because the sun would set at about six.

This is the business centre of Tallinn. I think all or most of those skyscrapers were already built in 2001 when I last visited the city.

The legendary Viru hotel opened by the Soviet travel agency Inturist in 1972. Many a Finnish traveler to Tallinn during the Soviet period had accommodation here. The rowing events of the Moscow Olympics in 1980 were held in Tallinn. Many of the guests stayed in that hotel. It is now part of the Finnish Sokos hotel chain.

These are of the northern part of the old town.

It was time to get back to the hotel. I went to the spa again. I noticed they had a salt sauna. It turned out it was a low-temperature sauna like the aroma sauna next to it. There was a large bowl full of salt in it that you were supposed to take handfuls of and rub all over your skin. I did so. I didn't feel any magic but the salt made me aware of a very small cut in my left foot. :)

I can tell you that going to the saunas and the jacuzzi felt really good after walking for the whole day.

Thinking we might go to Tallin when we come up to Finland next year. You're swaying me...

I'd say it's very good value for the time and money spent.

Looks really nice. I think it would make a nice side trip from Tampere. :)

Enjoy.

Home already. I didn't take my laptop with me and editing the pictures on the phone would've been torture. :)

Ah ok, yeah I get it. Well, we're thinking it would be a good spot to go for a few days. It will probably happen. They speak english over there? I mean I speak heaps of languages: Australian, English, American, Australian slang, New Zealandish, swear, the language of love..Just don't speak bloody Estonian. :)

Yes, most people can speak English there.

Very nice old town! Lots of interesting architecture. Those medieval structure are very strong and last a long time!

There must be many ghosts around that area!

I'm sure the must be ghost stories as well.

Very good! I like good ghost stories!
