Power Couple of the Year 2018 - Tampa Bay

Tampa FL - Beautiful people from around the globe gathered for the Power Couples’ Ball in grand style. It was the perfect evening for an extravagant Date Night and the presentation of the Last Mile Scholarship in honor of our son, Braxton Daryl Johnson. The Power Couples Ball actually started in 2010 to honor our son, who died in 2008 in a single car accident on US 19 coming home from college.

With the death of so many young Black men, my wife, Tampa Bay Tammy wanted to focus on Saving our Sons but felt it began with sav-ing parents and their marriages. We believe that marriage is the bedrock of the family and it is im-perative for fathers and mothers to encourage their sons in the belief of moving forward in life with a help mate. However, they must see it to achieve it. This years’ Power Couple exemplifies just that in their daily walk. The Power Couple of the Year is Dr. Jomo and Dr. Charmaine Cousins, senior pastors at Love First Christian Center in River-view, Florida.

Drs. Jomo and Charmaine Cousins, were married in 1998 directly out of College. Charmaine from St. Petersburg, Florida and Jomo from Kingston, Jamaica met and fell in love at FAMU (Florida A&M University). Jomo graduated with a BS in Business Economics and Charmaine graduated with a BS in Graphic Design/Print Management. Jomo was drafted to the NFL fully able to afford a wife, they were joined as one in holy matrimony. Their careers took them to Arizona, Berlin, Germany and New York – with the Arizona Cardinals, NFL Europe League and the NY Giants as a defensive end. There was also a successful career as a realtor selling trailer homes in Arizona. Their true calling resulted in both returning to college, specifically the Tabernacle Bible College and Seminary, to earn their Doctorate degrees in Divinity. They dreamed of planting a church with a simple goal: to help people connect with God in a church without letting structures and programs get in the way. Their dream became a reality when they founded Love First Christian Center in July 2008 Drs. Jomo & Charmaine host a yearly marriage retreat called Love On Purpose (LOP), where they bring couples together to focus on the building blocks of successful marriages. In 2011, after the death of Jomo’s mother they began the Jennifer Newman Scholarship Fund which gives scholarships annually, ranging from $250 to $1000. Charmaine is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Brandon South Rotary and Brandon All Chil-dren’s Hospital. Jomo is Author of 2 Books: Fully Equipped -You Have All You Need To Succeed and ABC’s of Success- Surviving the Storms. Love First Christian Center was nominated for the Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards for Best Church 3 years in a row 2014 - 2016. Their vision is:

• To encourage and be filled with the Holy Spirit
• To evangelize our community, our county and our country
• To embrace every person in Godly love, for God is Love!
