A woman named Tara Dower just managed to hike the entire Appalachian trail in a bit over 40 days. That's about 55 miles per day. Assuming 5 hours per day for sleep and 2 hours for eating and hygiene, that's 3.2mph the entire time - 17 hours per day for 40 days, even while dealing with thousands of feet of altitude changes, rough trail surfaces, thunderstorms, and other issues.
