A little bit of history 一些历史回顾
In Malaysia, there's this type of traditional coffee shop called Hainan Coffee shops. Hainan is a place in China Canto region. For unknown reasons, the Hainan people literally makes good coffee and they're one of the earliest to start coffee shop business in Malaysia, and therefore in Malaysia many traditional coffee shops still own by the Hainan Chinese. Here's a picture I took NOT from the coffee shop but from Malaysia Chinese Museum sometimes back. I did not make up the story. And for today's highlight, Hainan Coffee is one of many local franchise(probably not own by Hainan anymore, probably not Chinese anymore, but they operate with a standardization of recipe and we get to continue to enjoy their good old traditional taste).
马来西亚这一片土地上的咖啡店基本上都是海南人操作的。至于为什么是海南人,还有一段很长的故事我也不想说太多。总之,当年华人下南洋,来到这片土地后,很多海南人是泡一手好咖啡的,所以大部份的咖啡店都是海南店主。到目前为止,很多传统餐馆都还是海南老板。至于我今天要介绍的这一家海南家乡味,看样子也不知道是否南洋老板了。不过可以肯定的是,由于统一厨房准备的食品,所以基本上食材/味道调教方面都保留了大部份古早味。这个故事,我不是老作的。图片是我在餐馆马来西亚华人博物馆时摄下来的。
Drink 饮料
I think I have had many times introduced local white coffee(basically it's just a type of overly roasted coffee beans with light bitter taste, pre-added with sugar and creamer to reduce the bitterness of the coffee), this time I was attracted by this milk with coconut sugar boba. They call it coconut sugar milk tea(matter of fact there's no tea in it). It's a cup of milk, mixed with coconut caramelized sugar, and the beads, the Taiwanese called Boba is made of several type of powdered grains. I'd say, by having this cup of 12oz milky sugary drink with those beads in it. I have never thought of adding coconut flavor into milk would make it taste outstandingly good. The caramel sugar blasting through my throat, and throw back the coconut smell back to my nasal causes my brain start to give sense of "soak in the cocounut, fly in the sky).
马来西亚有名的白咖啡我已经介绍过很多次了,基本上都是咖啡豆被炒焦,磨成粉状后冲调出来的咖啡加上了奶和糖来减低苦味。今天我是被这个椰糖珍珠奶(茶)吸引来的。椰糖是马来西亚马六甲的特产,椰子的焦糖味道香浓美味,架上了牛奶和珍珠,上面英文的是介绍给老外珍珠哪里来的这里略过了。这一大杯喝起来不能说不饱。特别是珍珠用米粉做的,喝下去的椰糖香齿留香。每一口牛奶配着珍珠在嘴里嚼噘是散发出来的椰香味倒流进鼻腔里,感到好像在空中飘的感觉。
Toast bread
Little fella just recovered from a lengthy influenze B. He's not up to any heavy breakfast, and ordered a toast bread with butter and strawberry spread. I took one side of the 4 and they taste pretty good. The butter is extremely butter, and I like that kind of butter smell. Strawberry spread is alright, perhaps those strawberry spread are quite natural, junior doesn't seem to like it much due to less sweetness. But I enjoy every bit of my portion.
这小家伙病了几天,到现在还没有什么食欲。叫他堂堂正正吃一顿丰富的早餐是不可能了,所以他自己点了烤面包扫奶油和草莓果酱。我拿了4片中的其中一片来吃,感觉奶油相当够,有一股骚味。果酱也扫得均匀,吃起来不会太甜。果酱的浓郁草莓味让人觉得这可能是昂贵的高档货,不甜就已经是一个很大的特点了。小家伙虽然口说不喜欢,可能不够甜的原因,不过还是吃完了。至于我,非常欣赏这配搭。
Golden fried rice 黄金蛋炒饭
The lettuce slices are very sweet! Girl does not like that so I took the veg, but left her with the cucumber. I scoped some of the fried rice, as soon as I slot them into my mouth... the rice fragrant almost melt my tongue. It's not too salty for heavy taste bud like myself. Having less salty meaning one can add soy sauce to enhance the flavor, but if it's too salty, then houston we have a problem. You can't possibly be adding water to a plate of fried rice to dilute the saltiness right? Taste pretty darn good! If you're not a heavy breakfast eater, this may not be suitable for you.
包菜切丝吃起来松脆香甜。这少女不爱吃,所以我就毫不客气的抓了一把吃掉了,把青瓜留了给她。我也顺便要了一口炒饭,蛋香浓郁的带出了米饭的香味,感觉饭好像要融化在我舌头上的感觉非常好。这炒饭煮的不太咸,如果你也是跟我一样重口味的可能就需要再添加酱油了。当然,淡口味还是比较好的,不够咸可以加。如果炒得太咸就没有得补救了。总不能往炒饭里加水来冲淡咸味吧。如果你早餐吃不多的话,就别吃着一个了。份量还相当充足。
Char Kuey Teow 炒果条
As I looked at the menu, all day western breakfast is 22.50, and a fried noodle is 15.70. And the pictures in the menu looks exactly like those I have in my home town - Ipoh, so I decided to give it a try. And not surprise, food served as exactly the look like in the menu. The noodle taste texture very soft but not to an extend of melting away. The bean sprout is very crunchy and slightly sweet. Prawns are very fresh, and the eggs are done just before it got harden. The whole plate of noodle I would rate 9 out of 10! Except one thing, this is one of the priciest fried noodle I ever had in my life. Even the expansive fried noodle in Penang only cost me 10 bucks, and this topped that by another half.
我在看菜单时,都谨慎的看了价钱才点餐的。本来看到西式早餐,不过价格22.5我就打消了念头,然后看到了炒河粉15.7就下定决心试试看。果然,炒粉端来了,跟菜单里的没有分别一样好看。味道很香,仿佛闻到厨房里的炒锅味。河粉的柔软度相当到位,还不至于入口即溶,不过口感就是一流。芽菜很鲜甜肥美,香脆带甜。虾子也很新鲜,鸡蛋应该是炒粉最后一轮上碟前敲上去的,刚刚好熟了还带一点湿。整体来说,这一碟炒河粉十分里面拿到了九分,还有一分不足就是价钱实在是我一生中吃过最贵的炒粉。连我在槟城吃过最贵的10元炒粉都比不上这个还要贵上一半的价格。
Affordable-ness 钱包亲和力
Well, I'd like to call this affordable or not, rather than expansive/cheap. There's no good food too cheap, and there's no cheap food too good to be true. More importantly, is the value for money, and how can we afford to eat it. Overall, paying 50 bucks excluding tax and service charge, this is outrageously expansive in my low income country. Over the weekend, if one suffer from missing the home town breakfast taste, like myself 200km away from my dad, here's an exact good place to find some "home town" taste. For 50, it's well worth the taste and services. Rather than spending 200 on petrol and toll and 4 hours traveling time just to get back home for a meal.
我决定的就是让亲和力来衡量食物的“友善”态度。这个世界上没有又便宜又多又好吃又少人光顾不必等的餐馆。重要是,个人对食物的价值观。如果你觉得好吃,再贵也得吃,非吃不可。三个人吃了五十块,还没饱消费税和小费都这个价格实在不能说便宜。不过,如果你周末想起了家乡的古早味,但是又好像我一样家乡在两百公里以外,这么五十元还是值得付的。毕竟,总不能花四个小时车程,两百块的路费和汽油就是为了赶会老家吃一顿吧?
