Tasteem Review of Chinese Hakka Cuisine

Last 3 weeks I went to Kuala Lumpur the Capital of Malaysia with my family and I brought them to one of the chinese restaurant for lunch.

The famous Hakka Cuisine Restaurant in Malaysia is called Ying Ker Lou and they have all the pure and originality Chinese Hakka menus. The founders of Ying Ker Lou are all Hakka even their managements and chefs! As I can say, I love their cook because they are all MSG Free!

MSG = Monosodium Glutamate which means there are no adding flavor/seasonings that have broth or other aged proteins which is not good for health. They retaining the richness in taste that strike the balance of taste and healthy eating.

The interior design of this restaurant is very special. We can feel the traditional decoration with nice atmosphere. The renovation are based on the real ‘Hakka’ homes in the province. The ambience is classy with slightly dim in lightings.

What is Chinese Hakka means

To be in short, ‘Hak’ means guest in Chinese and ‘Ka’ is family. The combination of ‘Hakka’ is Guest Family.

In their foods and drinks menu, the first 2 pages after the cover and before the menus, they explained The Hi-story (history) of ‘Hakka’. Kindly read them so you will understand more about ‘Hakka’.

What we ordered

Hakka dishes is what this restaurant is all about! They serve wide range of authentic Hakka Cuisines here and I myself wanted to try everything because of all the foods with pictures look delicious with the nostalgic flavors.

Me and family got no idea what is their signature dishes that is a Must Try! and we asked their waiter to introduce us. As we are not so hungry by that time due to we had a late breakfast, and we ordered some to share with each other. So the waiter recommended us their Chef’s dish which is their handmade ‘Hakka’ Pan Mee.

What’s the taste and how I rated

Let me explain the first signature Hakka dish, Salt Baked ‘Kampong’ Chicken with Herbs. This dish is “The real deal” as like the traditionally made Salt Baked Chicken but with herbs. The true essence of the chicken really comes when served and the smell of rice wine all over the table which is also served with bold dipping sauce that looks good. The chicken emerges exceedingly juicy and not salty at all.

The main Handmade Hakka Pan Mee is a must try whenever you come to this restaurant. This is their signature noodles with traditional taste. The noodles is made with a simple flour-based dough. The soup is hot, sweet and fragrant with anchovy broth, fresh pork meat balls, shiitake mushrooms, vegetables and topped with crispy fried anchovies. The noodles are hand-stretched into flat thin pieces. All I can say the noodles are not too soft, not too hard but just perfect in the way and time they cooked. The meat ball are tender. Best served with a dipping of Chili sauce.

The tea is a bit pricey but that’s the best combination when having Chinese cuisine. They are bitter but fragrant.

The Service

The waiters and waitresses are very friendly. Once entering the restaurant, you will be greeted by them.

This is what I paid for 4 of us!

The price was on the high end but I can’t complain much due to the quality of foods.

They were awarded as one of the best restaurant in Malaysia by Malaysia Tatler
