What is wa gui?

Wa gui is a local Taiwanese food, it is made from grounded rice paste that is steamed in a little bowl. That in itself sounds bland and boring, which is true, so the trick is the quality of the rice and hence the rice paste, and the additional ingredients. It can be either sweet or savoury.

Kajimi does a very good award winning wa gui. This is their award for winning the best wa gui in 2018 on the central region.

Before I show you the food, let me show you the oustide of Kajimi. Its run by a young couple and these are their kids running around.

And now for Kajimi's signature wa gui which has a modern twist. The wa gui is the white element on the dish, basically its pretty much tasteless other than the hint of rice fragrance. If you eat a lot of rice then you will know what I mean. It's quite soft and smooth, and not crumbly nor hard, which means they have the right balance of rice to water. The twist to their wa gui is the additional ingredient, the minced pork mix on the side. That was perfect to add flavour to the bland wa gui. My wife loved how they added the happy smiley face on top with the gravy. This was ne dish where it taste as good as it looks.

Kajimi does other meals as well, like this plate of corgi meatballs. Don't worry, its not made of dog meat, its just called corgi meatball after their resident dog. You can see him hiding underneath the chair. This was a another plate of very well made food.

It wasn't that busy after I finished lunch, so I hung around for a while to finish off my drink.

Kajimi is a great little joint and these local places deserves more support. I'll definitely be back again to eat more if their wa gui and corgi... meatballs 😉

Wow, rice is really good for remaking into other food substances. Wa gui looks like a food I'd love to try out one of these days.
