Tattu - A Tasteem Review

It was our wedding anniversary last week and @bingbabe has been rattling on about a swanky restaurant in central Manchester named Tattu.

I conceded to take her there fully expecting my pockets to be empty when vacating the place.

This is the story of what could have been a 'Blind Date'.

Tattu is in the ‘Spinningfields’ part of Manchester which is a fifteen-minute walk from the main town centre.

It wasn’t a good start as @bingbabe decided to dress up in her glad rags and heels. They are ill-suited to walking.

Fortunately, we were airlifted into the surrounding area and Jeeves the butler took us swiftly to our destination in one of our many ‘rollers’.

Having dismissed Jeeves we entered a restaurant which was not so evident of its own existence from the outside.

Even using online maps, we had trouble finding the place and I had to inquire at a nearby food takeout.

IMG_5142.jpg

The name and logo were marked on the side of the door, but still, it was not an obvious place to see.

IMG_5109.jpg

We did have a booking so were quickly escorted through this downstairs area and up to what is ‘the restaurant’. The décor was quite stunning with a magnificent large purple tree stealing the show.

IMG_5110.jpg

I don’t know whether it was real as I didn’t touch it, there were people sitting close to the tree and all those tables were taken.

IMG_5116.jpg

They offered us the crappiest table in the house which we rebuffed rather sharply. The place was 75% empty so why do they do this?

IMG_5118.jpg

The waiter needed to have a conference with his superiors before deciding to give us one of the other 30 empty tables and so we eventually sat and took in the menu.

IMG_5113.jpg

IMG_5114.jpg

IMG_5115.jpg

The first thing I noticed was the mandatory 10% tip enforced on diners. I do tip if I get good service and food but being forced too doesn’t really go down to well with me.

IMG_5117.jpg

Nevertheless, the waiter was accommodating and informed us that the small plates are popular for sharing and FIVE would be enough for us both as well as some rice.

We did take his advice and ordered the Kimchi Crab Cakes at £7.50, Drunken Chicken Wings at £9, Sticky Beef Short Rib at £10, Crispy Pork Belly at £8 and the Chilli Salt Baby Squid at £9.

I was wondering how all these small plates were going to fit on a table for two that was not overly large. The waiter assured us that the plates would arrive in a staggered manner.

IMG_5119.jpg

Service was fast at Tattu and before we knew it the Crab Cakes and Wings arrived. The first lot of food was a mixed bag.

IMG_5120.jpg

I didn’t really care for the Cakes but the Wings were excellent, even though the creamy sauce was visually reminiscent of a McDonalds Toffee Sundae.

IMG_5122.jpg

The second batch of small plates arrived right away after the first ones were cleared away.

IMG_5121.jpg

IMG_5125.jpg

Again, it was a mixed bag of quality, the Squid being a little dry and overcooked resulting in little taste to the Beef which was succulent and rich. @bingbabe particularly enjoyed the Pork Belly.

IMG_5123.jpg

While eating from the second round of plates a
strange aroma entered my nasal passages; the unmistakable smell of Cannabis resin. While it's not an unpleasant smell, I didn't expect someone nearby to be ‘skinning up' in such a place.

The aroma left as quickly as it arrived and try as I might I could not find the perpetrator.

IMG_5138.jpg

The bill came to just under £60. I was quite relieved as expensive as this sounds. The food was decent but probably not quite worth the asking price.

@bingbabe was more complimentary of Tattu, the Pork having a bigger impact on her taste buds than mine.

IMG_5139.jpg

Would I return to Tattu? Possibly, but probably not. The food was not bad at all, in fact above average but there are many more restaurants in the city yet to be tried.

There are more restaurants in the city that haven't been tried yet are facts that make more sense than anything. But for some cases I will usually really return if the food is good, and the price can still be reached by my income.

A restaurant that offers a suitable place for dating, and congratulations for your wedding anniversary. (Prices may be ignored to make your lover happy. :D)

Well, good that they gave you another table in the end. Why would they even have to think about that when the place was almost empty?

Protip for restaurants: replace your menus after they get stained or cover them with plastic :P

Why would they even have to think about that when the place was almost empty?

It's not the first time, they seem to like herding people into a bunch leaving large parts of the restaurant empty. Maybe its a UK thing, I don't know.

That is pretty crazy about the tip. Usually they only do that for large groups of people from what I have seen in the past. Never with just two people anyway. Maybe the upkeep of the purple tree requires some extra income for them. The food looked pretty good and the prices not too bad for the type of restaurant it was.

It looks like quite ordinary food in posh surroundings - though maybe the food tastes better than it looks. And £59.40 for two is great value! I went out to a restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday a couple of months ago, and my main course was very mediocre - an almost tasteless pasta - for about £20. Add this to £53 for two bottles of red wine which I paid a quarter of, and I felt thoroughly ripped off! Would never go there again.
Oh, and Happy Anniversary to you both!

Ah, we tend to avoid Wine when out. It's always stupid prices.

Sensible.

lol, by the look of the menus - the stains! - I would have high tailed it outta there!

There's a small trend happening in NYC where the 15 or20% tip is included in the price of the dishes, so no need to figure out a tip at all !

LOL, everyone seems to have focused on the menu! i didn't notice it at the time, the place was so grand. The tip thing happens in London all the time, and is starting to move outside the capital.

Its annoying but not mandatory. I would get black looks if I didn't adhere, mind you!

They offered us the crappiest table in the house which we rebuffed rather sharply. The place was 75% empty so why do they do this?

That's a very good question. (Wondering what constitutes "the crappiest table in the house." ) I think that would have put me off them before I even sat down.

The first thing I noticed was the mandatory 10% tip enforced on diners.

I wonder why restaurants don't consider the terrible PR message this sends. It seems unnecessarily graceless -- and as you said, offensive. (Wondering if this just amounts to a surcharge for extra profit for the owners or if the wait-staff ever see a dime from this.)

And a 10% "tip" in the States is considered pretty chintzy. So, AFAIC, they've created this ill will for basically nothing. Pretty arrogant when you think about it.

Nevertheless, the waiter was accommodating and informed us that the small plates are popular for sharing and FIVE would be enough for us both as well as some rice.

Five wouldn't begin to do it. Not even close. The Weasel could go through five of these babies without even pausing for breath.

The food presentation is lovely. Too bad some of it wasn't up to snuff. (The physical condition of those menus, however, is awful. Srsly. I read what you said about them ... but frankly that doesn't cut it. It's like sending a business letter to someone you spilled coffee all over. What kind of impression do you think that would make?)

(Also just wondering ... have you ever had a meal you thought was just to die for? Anywhere? Ever? By that I mean ... a meal you thought was just fabulous / just perfect / just splendid in every way. Not one you thought was liable to kill you. Just in case that idiom doesn't translate properly to you folks on the other side of The Pond.)

Wondering what constitutes "the crappiest table in the house."

It was in the middle of a bunch of other tables, too close to each other for my liking (a pet hate) and nowhere near a window or wall (caveman protection instincts kicking in).

Five wouldn't begin to do it. Not even close. The Weasel could go through five of these babies without even pausing for breath.

They were surprising filling, although I tend to have an appetite of a sparrow these days. Call it getting old.

The food presentation is lovely. Too bad some of it wasn't up to snuff.

It was top notch for presentation, but sometimes looks deceive.

Also just wondering ... have you ever had a meal you thought was just to die for? Anywhere? Ever?

I have, many times. The thing is most @tasteem review's say the same thing, the food was great, this was the best ever... blah, but that's rarely the case. Also, if you smell some ganja while fine dining, it has to be told!

I did some early @tasteem reviews, 'The Fisherman' and 'Yu and Yu' which were both fantastic. I am a fussy bastard when it comes to food though, if your paying it had better be good.

Nothing like a properly worn and stained menu!

Happy New Year, Slopperchops! It has been a pleasure and I look forward to the grey winter days of 2019 where I will find time to read the chronicles of your past.

I'm not sure those 'stains' are just that! The paper is a little creaky but I think these are designs on the paper.

It has been a pleasure too, and thanks for your early support of my work. I remember things like that only too well. Happy New Year to you and your family!

Never heard of Tattu, but it looks like it could be on Tatooine.

The food really looks incredible. I'd love to try it someday.

It does look good, and some if it was as good as it looked. I tried to focus on the good when I do these, even bad reviews have something good usually.

This place was good, and my wife said she wants to go again. I'm not so sure.

The dim sum menu looks delicious, I probably would have tried those :) It's a slightly strange menu, though ... foie gras and truffles?
It drives me bonkers when they do that thing with the crap table ... I was offered the same tiny table in a corridor twice in a hotel restaurant once, when the restaurant was barely half full. To make it worse, it was the same person each time! I did say to her, I turned that table down yesterday, why would I sit there today? I usually just tell them no and point to where I do want to sit. I also refuse to pay service charges on bills. If the bill arrives with it included, I ask for it to be removed. If the service has been good, I'll leave a tip. Tsk!
You're right: we need to know about the ganga.
It's been a lovely year getting to know you and enjoying your posts. Here's to 2019 - I hope it's great for everyone :) Happy New Year!

Thanks shani, it was good to meet you at SF3. Happy New Year to you!!

The table thing has happened multiple times, we just ask for this or that table. Sometimes they are not too happy, but wont risk a walkout.

See I am so cheap I hate to be adventurous. In other words, if I find a decent place, I tend to revisit rather than try new...Im a cheapass chicken IOW LOL

I do go back to places often, its just finding somewhere good is hard. There are many average joe places, I mean 80% are in that category.

Happy annivesary to you. What a nice place to bring your date.

I like the design and the ambience but the foods are pricey.

the foods are pricey.

That's what you get eating in the city centre!

I hate it when waiters stick you at a table in the corner or by the entrance to the toilet as if you don't look good enough to be seen, have absolutely no idea why they do that. Anyway, regardless of that, the setting does look really good. Was just wondering, and honestly I'm not being rude here, but those dishes didn't look very big, more like bite size snacks. Did you have to get a kebab afterwards?

They were filling and we didn't need any more food when done!

tks for sharing menu!

It was a very meaty meal, and the veggie offerings in the main section add up to two. Not so good at all. Plenty of seafood though.
