The Plateau Restaurant Bar and Grill was not our eatery of choice while in London last month. It was a case of, ‘where is the food court’, but that doesn’t seem to exist in Canary Wharf.
Saturday lunchtime is busy wherever you are in the UK, and even more so in the capital.
We struggled to find anywhere to eat being comparative aliens to this area and happened upon an elevator door proclaiming food!
Reluctantly we entered fearing our bank accounts were going to be wiped out if we ordered more than a starter.
£20 a head for a 2-course meal proclaimed the sign, not as bad as I thought but was it edible?
Unlimited bubbles for £18, no thanks!
I can't show you the outside of this restaurant as there simply isn't one.
It's a case of getting in the elevator and hope for the best.
Having exited the elevator this establishment did look more like a restaurant but I felt a little apprehensive.
Where were the men? Was this an all exclusive women’s restaurant that I had unwittingly entered?
I checked to see if I had my drag clothes on, makeup applied and skirt wrapped around my posterior.
No, I was definitely dressed in my regular garb and nobody seem to care besides me.
Settling down close to the window I attempted to calm my nerves and reached for the menu.
We ordered Salmon on a bed of rice for @bingbabe and a Pork Chop with asparagus for me.
The noise level in The Plateau was bordering on annoying.
There were a couple of tables of giggling women who looked straight from the sets of ‘The Real Housewives of Orange County' only a little younger.
There was no doubt in my mind that they had paid for the ‘Unlimited Bubbles’ deal looking at the endlessly flowing alcohol flowing down their craning necks.
Service was reasonable and I was so glad that I had ordered a side of chips.
The chop looked nice and meaty but there wasn’t much more on the plate.
@bingbabe didn’t have a much better deal and took some of my chips to help fill the gap.
She did state the fish was nice and I have to say the chop was REALLY nice, but the experience was too short lived.
My fish photograph ended up blurred
There was a second course, after all, so surely we would be full after that?
I chose the short straw with what was described as ‘mini doughnuts’ but in reality were empty ones.
Sure there was some cream and a little fondant but the reality was they tasted boring and plain.
@bingbabe meanwhile loved her Crème Brulee and shared a little with me. I had definitely chosen wrong this time.
Being in London we are faced with this 12.5% "discretionary" but not necessarily obligatory service charge everywhere we dine.
I had forgotten about it to be honest as I rarely visit the capital.
It never goes down well and the price we paid for two at £58 represents poor value for money.
Despite the amazing Pork Chop, I can't recommend
The Plateau Restaurant Bar and Grill due to the high prices.
The food is good but there are better and cheaper places to eat in London.

Was "bottomless" meant to describe the food or were they referring to the bubbly.

That was the bubbly, they were all drinking it and yapping so loudly I couldn't hear what @bingbabe was saying. My partial deafness doesn't help much though.

It happens! this place can be a steep learning curve. I should probably do some more writing on these topics at some point.

Wow... you went classy this time! Pity that not everything was quite up to standard though... Hope you didn't feel too awkward being the only guy in the restaurant! I never know where to eat in London... it's just too big.... although, there is plenty of choice... perhaps too much though...

We had no choice, there's no fast food places around there, just overpriced snazzy ones.

The chips looked good at least. The pork chop also looked pretty tasty. Too bad it wasn't very big. I think you find that a lot with the fancier places. The prices go up and the portions go down. As opposed to the typical chain places where the prices are reasonable but the portions are immense in the US. It's too bad they can't find a happy medium!

Yes they are. I haven't visited since 2004, has anything changed?

No, I don't think so. I never really realized it until I started posting reviews on Tasteem and so many people from other countries commented on how big the portion sizes are. If that is normal to us, no wonder we have an obesity crisis!

If you are not American and have visited, then you see it. Even the McDonalds fries are bigger, and those 64oz drinks...! are they still about, or have they gone to 128oz now?

The place was very crowded by women.
Maybe men would be better off saving their money to go elsewhere 😃

That sure looks nice @slobberchops but unlimited bubbly drinks for 18 quids is too much to pay for I guess.

Wow, I’ve never even seen a “discretionary” charge before. The servers must take a hit on tips because of that.

Likely they get their tips from this 'charge'. It's only in London and a few others outside the capital who feel their restaurant is above par.

London is often expensive and over-rated in my opinion. It seems there are enough well off people to keep all these restaurants going (but not Jamie Oliver's according to the news). It can be a precarious business.

Oh it is expensive, but this was the marathon weekend (the day before in fact) so we were all out of options.
It was my idea to go to Canary Wharf, I thought there would be more eateries but it was full of overpriced places like this one.

Not exactly a budget area. I expect the whole weekend was expensive, but I'm sure the memories will be precious.

OK, that's fair enough. I tend to do a lot of restaurants for @tasteem and try and highlight the vegetarian options if I can.
The last one I was eating Cheese and Onion Pie, I'm not adverse to non meat dishes!

great tasteem review.
I guess the cost of living is high so the price of food is expensive.
