Ice & Spice - A Tasteem Review

Ice and Spice is a split food type restaurant. What’s one of those I hear you thinking?

It’s a term I just invented and you can take some clues from the name. They cater for both westerners and incorporate food from the Far East.

Technically this should suit @bingbabe and I perfectly, but did it do the job?

IMG_0119.JPG

I could see a menu in the window but as my other half has already eaten here before we went in and took a table.

The insides were red; an unusual décor colour and one that reminded me of a certain Thai restaurant in Bedfordshire that appeared to have blood on the walls.

That was a long time ago, before STEEM and my review was on TripAdvisor.

It got right up the noses of the owner who retorted badly as I had mucked up their other ‘perfect reviews.

In Ice and Spice, I was confident the walls were not made up of human bodily fluids and settled to look at the menu.

IMG_0124.JPG

I could see right away the likes of ‘Fish and Chips’ had other delectable treats such as ‘Chicken Fried Rice’ alongside each other.

IMG_0125.JPG

Looking around I noticed a visitor's book and some entries inside.

IMG_0134.JPG

All were good (of course), the owner I guess would rip out the pages if a bad one was present.

IMG_0121.JPG

I ordered HomeMade Plate Meat Pie at £7.50 with @bingbabe who was feeling extra greedy that day, Singapore Fried Rice at £8.10 and a side of Spare Ribs at £7.10

Add two cups of tea and we were all set for what I hoped would be a feast.

IMG_0127.JPG

…’Tea is well… just Tea’

The English owner was very friendly but got nervous when I started shooting pictures, and as usual, I had to explain my actions.

They must be under a lot of pressure, I wonder who else enters and take photographs for ‘other reasons?

IMG_0122.JPG

He appears to have a Chinese cook in the backroom somewhere, which would explain the multi-culture menu.

IMG_0130.JPG

The pie was delivered and it was OK, but to be honest I would not order it again. The portion was a little small and the filling did not exactly awake my culinary senses.

IMG_0133.JPG

I didn’t try the rice, but the spare ribs were on another level.

These were coated with that special substance only Chinese people know about, had some small red chilies hanging off them as well as onions and were fantastic.

IMG_0132.JPG

I think I devoured most of them with a sulky @bingbabe muttering something about, ‘keep to your own food’ under her breath.

At £7.10 I would consider these ribs an expensive starter but when they are this good, I tend to ignore the price.

I finished my very average pie and chips and felt too full for what was advertised on the wall.

IMG_0136.JPG

…'Jam Roly-Poly and Custard for £3.., Ooooh so tempting’…

Eat it and I will soon be looking like a human Roly Poly, so better off I don’t.

Ice & Spice is a nice, laid back clean restaurant which I feel excels when it comes to the 'Spice' section.

IMG_0126.JPG

The ‘Ice’ is perhaps the western food? I would give it another go but the pie is strictly off my agenda. This could make for a good Blind date restaurant especially if your date is Asian!

IMG_0137.JPG

@dismayedworld joined us and wanted a takeaway bumping the price up a little.

£38 seems a little much for a market town café come restaurant but we did get a lot of food for the price.

IMG_0135.JPG

Overall not a bad venue and you need to consider it does reside in the semi snooty town of Clitheroe, East Lancashire.

A town noted for prices slightly above average.

The pie looks weird for me. 😁

#tasteem-curation

It was a little 'manufactured' for my tastes!

@slobberchops , the way you and @bozz are talking about the ribs it makes me think im really missing out on something, .... so would you say these are better than the ones at TGI's ? ............ £38.00 is a bit expensive like.

£38 was for ALL the food, that's 3 of us.

I had TGI's ribs this weekend, and yes you are missing out.

were the ribs u had at this place better than the ones at TGI's ?, .. which you normally rave about to me.

They were different, but I would still rate TGI's as the best.

The English owner was very friendly but got nervous when I started shooting pictures

Possibly because...

He appears to have a Chinese cook in the backroom somewhere

A combination of Immigration and Coronavirus nerves perhaps? lol

I have to say, I think the decore looked like a 1950s council toilet block. Maroon and white tiles? The black and yellow hazard warning tape was a classy touch!!

Absolutely agree with you about the prices in small, day time market town cafe. Not somewhere I'd call in for a cheap lunch whilst shopping, I'd want some ambience for that price!

The owner also possibly nervous due to the 'one for the back pocket' receipt !!

The shabbier the places are, the more chance of these kinds of receipts.

In Rochdale, it was often a case of no receipt.., you may have seen some of the tasteems I did there.

The distinctive red colour is actually out of this world, it's definitely strange but I find it grand and unique. I love the rice, seems somehow really attractive, the tea seems really cool and wonderful and I'm still relishing how red this place looks like. Amazing tasteem review

Red is an unusual colour for a restaurant. Tea is a very English drink and served everywhere, it keeps us warm if nothing else!

Those substance only Chinese people knows about in the spare ribs sometimes surprises me how they make it to perfection. Looks tasty too

I think you need to be Chinese to know the secret!

That is a freaky fusion menu!! But the Asian part of it did look rather nice!

That cook in the back is doing a good job, maybe he cooked the pie and she did the rest. Hope he's paying her well, that's the strength of Ice & Spice!

It might be!! You need to ditch the pies though! Get bingbabe to other types the next time you go out! Imagine that rice dish, mmm mmm!!

She's a huge rice fan, but I'm not. There are other Chinese dishes there that I might have a go at!

I am letting my own bias speak for me, I love rice and that dish looked immense!

I enjoyed your humorous review, SC! :)

You cant get away with such things on TripAdvisor! That and we get some STEEM for writing, give it a go!

I didn't know TA doesn't allow humor. Harrumph!

Yeah, I don't quite get the name of the place. I don't feel like it really fits with the overall theme. The rice does look pretty fantastic. The item you got doesn't look too appealing to me. I don't really care for peas though. With a menu that diverse, there is definitely other stuff you could try next time.

If those ribs were not so high priced, I would be ordering TWO portions of 'em! Next time I'm in that town, I'll go back just for them.

Pie's are a big thing here, the gravy was a big thick too I felt.

It looks a bit too uniform to me. In my opinion the sloppier it is the more homemade it is. Ribs are expensive everywhere to be honest. I think a half rack over here costs north of $12. A full rack is right around $18 for baby backs. Typical price at the store is right around $2.99 per pound.

Ahh.. you needed to taste them. The ribs photo is not as clear as it could be but I don't tend to take doubles in case of this.

Sloppy is messy! They don't always provide water bowls for your fingers here.

Oh yeah, the ribs look great. I was talking about the pie :)

The chippy we use does Chinese too, so I guess it has similar appeal. Isn't red a lucky colour in China? You really do dine out a lot. You could almost go pro in the review game ;)

I feel a lot of restaurants may not take kindly to my reviews. I couldn't write like this on TripAdvisor, isn't decentralization great?

It could get interesting if businesses got into Steem. They could get trolled. I do worry people like Bernie would drive them away for kicks.

Hmm, I don't know what he would do, he's hard to read.
