Some weeks before I found a nice little café in the downtrodden northern town of Rochdale, Lancashire and I gave it a reasonably positive review.
It was with some surprise when while bored at lunchtime we explored the other side of this town to find the Sorrento Coffee Bar.
The surprise being that on entering that it looked remarkably similar to the San Remo Coffee Bar, not just in the style of the name but the dude serving behind the counter.
Unless he has a twin brother it seems there are two variants of these ‘coffee bars’ that don similar designs.
If this was the case, I was expecting only good things and after some deliberation and staring at the multitude of menu information all stuck on the wall, I ordered Cheese & Onion Pie and Chips at £3.90 telling them to please ditch the gravy.
@goblinknackers grabbed a Steak & Onion Sandwich having had the same dish in the San Remo Coffee bar, and furtively hoping it would be the same here.
Only one pie remained, I didn’t really fancy it too much. Someone has unleashed their fury at some point on the pie warmer.
The café seemed to empty a little when we sat down; had I missed adding the deodorant that morning? I’m sure I didn’t stink that badly.
Hoodies are not allowed at some places due to their intimidating looks, but not here.
Within 10 minutes the food appeared looking remarkably like it came from other café. I didn’t ask the owner, and felt I didn’t need too after tasting the food.
Most of the pies served at the Sorrento Coffee Bar are from local producer Hollands that is except the plate pies. I guess they have another local source and I can’t fault them.
Like most cheap food places the chips are frozen, but still tasty. When I make frozen chips they taste like genuine cardboard.
The pie was nice, hot, filling and full of that gooey cheese I expect from this type of pie.
@goblinknackers’ was similarly enjoying his Steak & Onion Sandwich, but mentioned it was not quite as good as the San Remo offering.
Alright so just ignore that last comment or you’re going to be eating lettuce for the rest of your lives.
Smoking in the UK was outlawed in public places in 2007. I do remember the times when I was gagging in places like this, some changes are for the greater good.
If it was those days I could imagine this café being smoke ridden. Not wishing to pigeon hole, but it’s one of those kinds of places.
Maybe I’m just a snobby bastard and a hater of passive cigarette smoke.
£5.10 with a cup of tea is great value. Just like its brother, the San Remo Coffee Bar I would recommend the Sorrento Coffee Bar without hesitation.

A proper British 'caff'. I like the profusion of menus on the wall. I can't say I eat at places like that too often and the veggie range tends to be limited, but I could have had your pie, assuming it's not made with lard.

Probably. I wonder if they are getting squeezed out by the chain cafes. There are so many coffee places around these days, but they won't do a decent pie.

I love the review from a down to earth place and I’m so glad about no smoking laws. Those days were disgusting.

We used to get gassed while eating sometimes. Middle aged women were the worst, despite the bad looks they just carried on puffing away.

The food looks really fantastic. I think this is a place where I could probably find something to eat. I really want to try the cheese and onion pies now! You have talked about them enough that it has piqued my interest. Is the onion really forward in the dish or is it more subtle?

They mix it in with the cheese, and make it all kind of mushy. I never saw anything like it in the US when living there. A very British cheap dish.

Despite the terrible appearance this is one of the better eating places in Rochdale. Bet you cant wait to visit eh?

I eat at all kinds of places, one of them a few nights ago was the most expensive food ever. Talk about the rich and not so famous.. it was not my idea to go there!
