The Eagle at Barrow - A Tasteem Review

Some days you set out to go to a specific restaurant only to be told there’s a thirty-minute wait before you can get a seat.

I am the impatient type and generally don’t want to wait. The restaurant in question is still to be visited; we have a booking this weekend so it’s not going to happen again!

Fortunately, we had a backup place in mind just a few minutes away so made for the Eagle at Barrow.

This is a quite simply a county pub in a semi-rural area. It doesn't claim to be too fancy, neither is it for the hardcore drinkers. It is the second time we have visited so we knew what to expect.

IMG_5989.jpg

The car park told me it was half full but I was surprised when we walked in to find the place almost deserted. That’s a good thing and maybe it was because we were a little early.

IMG_5987.jpg

The deserted feeling did not last long and several other diners arrived shortly after, but not before I got some photographs in.

IMG_5988.jpg

It’s quite a large building with the left side being dedicated to the restaurant and the right containing more casual seating. We were asked if we wanted to eat in the bar or the restaurant; we chose the latter.

IMG_5980.jpg

This waiter, or was he the boss noticed me taking this snap but didn’t say anything on this occasion. It does get old explaining time and time again.

IMG_5979.jpg

As it was Sunday, there was a special menu. We were surprised that @dismayedworld joined us but I guess she was just hungry.

IMG_5982.jpg

I ordered the Lancashire Cheese and Onion Pie at £12.75, hoping that it was Lancashire cheese inside. I’m quite partial to that type.

IMG_5981.jpg

@bingbabe went for the Roast Leg of Lamb from the specials menu at £14.95 and @dismayedworld, the Cottage Pie at the same price.

Service was a little slow, though the restaurant was hardly packed. If I have anything critical to say, it is this point.

IMG_5983.jpg

Sometimes it is hard to judge food by its looks and to be honest the look of the food we received was not the greatest eye-candy I have seen.

IMG_5984.jpg

The Pie looked decent, the chips too but I had forgotten that it came with that green slimy stuff called ‘Mushy Peas’. @dismayedworld quickly scooped up the slime and had a taste only to pull a face.

The slime then went to @bingbabe who ALWAYS likes this stuff, and so it finally found a home.

IMG_5985.jpg

The pie was really good with that gooey cheese inside that reminds me of school dinners. That's not a slam, more praise. They did a great Cheese and Onion pie at my school.

I was getting nods of approvals from the other two but did not try them myself. @bingbabe did scoop a piece of my pie though. Some things really don’t change.

I have entered this review into the Cheap and Fabulous contest because I thought at £50 for THREE of us it was decently priced.

I for one enjoyed the Eagle at Barrow and will be back. The food is good and the ambience is pleasant.

The location keeps out the beer boys away and the crowd is mostly families looking for a good quality meal at a decent price.

It looks like a house in general but with a large yard! Maybe someday I can open a small cafe in my house :D
#tasteem-curation

LOL, it's much bigger than a regular house.. I'm not sure if the owners live in it too, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I thought that the food looked pretty good, they seemed to have put in some effort in presenting it. The only thing that didn't looks so great for me were the fries ;-)

The were better than they looked, that goes for all the food there. The first time we went I was not so impressed. I generally give places two goes unless its terrible.

I really like the seating they have in the lounge area . Places like that are really cool to me because it makes you feel like you are sitting in your living room or something. I am always surprised by your reviews and the difference in portion sizes from the US to over there. No wonder most of us are all over weight!

We are not doing so good in the obesity tables for Europe. The UK is amongst the highest and always seems to be dominating the news. Still, the US can be overkill for peeps such as me with sparrow appetites.

It's probably mostly because of the beer over there :)

I like the look of that place! And the a la carte menu looks fantastic. I am a fan of good mushy peas. They have to be piping hot. Those ones look good.

Urrgghh, I'll send them up to Scotland in a paper bag if you forward me your address ;)

Hmm... maybe not.

The food looks pretty good but the atmosphere seems absolutely amazing. Talk about down home. I'd love to go eat there. It just seems like it would be really relaxing.

Nice nice nice! Great eye candies for me... 😋😋😋

I love and enjoyed your review. On the 2nd last photo...that Cheese and Onio pie...I was hoping you cut it and see what's inside that pie...😋😋

Your rght, I should have cut into it. You can't really see what is in there.

I think it should go with valentine series, I believe the night fall with wood fire oven next to it will be very romantic!!

I do have another one planned. I try and post it before the contest ends.

Nice review!!
Looks like a really nice place to eat out!

That Sunday menu looks lush! I could easily go for three courses (if I were to drop one, it would be the main course, although I don't know ... smoked haddock ... ). The lounge bar looks very relaxed, and I like the mismatched chairs in the restaurant. The food looked plain but nicely done, and the vegetables looked fresh. I don't know, can't even have a cheese and onion pie to yourself!

£50 for three is a very good price. Shame about the mushy peas.

3 courses, not a chance with my birdlike appetite, 2 possibly at a squeeze. Yes, my food always gets raided by the good lady. All the running makes for a voracious appetite.
