Deep in the small city of Salerno, lies a truly local pizzeria untouched by foreign influence. Not noticeable on any review sites, nor did it pop up on any search engines, Criscemunno stayed true to word of mouth marketing and that's how we came across this wonder of a place.
Introduced by the owner of our hotel, Criscemunno was his top place of recommendation for pizza. Despite it being quite a walk from our accommodation, never did we regret spending our time on the streets in search of the restaurant, because the first slice of Criscemunno's pizza rewarded it all.
Located near a cathedral, Criscemunno's entrance is on an elevated ground making you walk up the steep slopes to get to the restaurant's door. From afar the restaurant looks like a an open air bungalow due to its veranda surrounding all sides of the restaurant. But an indoor seating is available with rocks used to line the walls.

The menu
Criscemunno specializes in pizza. Proud of using only local ingredients, their whole story from farm to table is explained on their table mat in hand drawn images. The pizza dough being the most important of all,
Being in Italy, you can't ignore the wine list. The price of wine bottle was extremely cheap at 12 Euros. Why not down a bottle?
The selection
Being in Italy, we wanted to take risks on our choices for the day, and so 'Bronte' it was. This was the first and the last time I've seen pistachio being used a key ingredient in a pizza. The recipe goes like this : Pistachio pesto, Buffalo Mozzarella, Red Sausage, Pistachio grains, Basil and Olives.
Pistachios were an out of the box, rather random type of nut to put on a pizza, but do not discount the impact this recipe has on the pizza. Creamy to taste and crunchy with the pistachio pieces, each bite gets more interesting. None of the flavors were overpowering over the other and bringing an all around creaminess.
Our next classical pizza selection was Napoletana. Recipe goes like this : Tomatoes, Oregano, Anchovies, Olives, Capers, Basil and Olive oil. Although we tried to stick to the classics, we did miss a mark as the pizza was much too salty for our Asian palates.
Our feast for the evening. Two pizzas were a bit too much for our bellies, we asked for the leftovers to be wrapped up in a take out box.
And look how amazing their pizza box package design is.
This restaurant was such an inspiring place, I had to leave with a picture with the owner. Thank you Criscemunno for an unforgettable taste of your heavenly pizzas.
