Hey Steemit!

So we had a big family dinner the other night to celebrate my sister-in-law securing a job at a really good company! As a treat, they invited my family and her family as well, and my brother offered to pay for the meal!

They chose Tung Lok, since it's my mum's favourite restaurant chain, and this time we tried the high class Tunglok XiHe Peking Duck at Orchard Central!

It was a really fancy restaurant, and felt noticeably different compared to the regular Tung Lok branches. I'm not sure if it was the ambience or the furniture, but it felt a bit more cramped in this branch despite everything. I think that's more to do with the location in Orchard though. They have another outlet in The Grandstand located in Bukit Timah (near Sixth Avenue MRT) but I've never been so I'm not sure how the layout is over there.

The food was definitely different since peking duck is not normally offered (and it was delicious!). If you've never heard of peking duck before, is a dish from Beijing (Peking) that has been prepared since the imperial era. The meat is characterized by its thin, crisp skin, with authentic versions of the dish serving mostly the skin and little meat, sliced in front of the diners by the cook.

The meat is often eaten with spring onion, cucumber and sweet bean sauce with pancakes rolled around the fillings. Sometimes pickled radish is also inside, and other sauces (like hoisin sauce) can be used.

So to eat peking duck, you would typically take a wrap (that was steamed in the bamboo basket), and wrap the duck together with some cucumber and spring onion and put some sweet sauce as such:

It was sooo yummy! I haven't had peking duck in a long long time but this one really held up! The skin was super crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. ๐Ÿ˜‹

We ordered many other dishes as well so this peking duck was like the appetiser.
There was broccoli with juicy shiitake mushrooms:

Sweet and sour pork ribs, which I'm not typically a fan of, but this was pretty good!
5.jpg

Double boiled chicken soup that was really tasty!
7.jpg

Poached fish with a slightly spicy sauce
6.jpg

Wok-fried vermicelli/bee hoon with seafood
8.jpg

And for dessert, chilled mango sago with coconut ice cream!

9.jpg

What a scrumptious meal! I was so stuffed I could barely finish my dessert! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I can imagine any meal in this restaurant is really quite pricey so it's definitely a special occasion type of thing but I'd recommend it if you want to give peking duck a try or you really like peking duck. It's undoubtedly their specialty.

Thanks for reading!
