A fairly new ice cream parlour landed in Sydney for some time now and we've finally visited just recently now that the crazy queues have died down. Yes, when there is something instagram-worthy in Sydney, you can expect long queues for weeks as everyone is jumping on that bandwagon and we love hopping on after the hype dies down a bit. I mean, you gotta try it out for yourself too, right?
Located in Burwood, Roji Monster is situated off the main street in Burwood and less than 5 metres down in a side street where it is pretty much somewhere I wouldn't dare to walk through on my own in that darkness. It's only dark because the cafe that was opened opposite Roji Monster has closed down... and there seems to be a lack of street lights here.
The area is fairly safe so no fear! It's only cuteness that peeps through the windows and welcome you at the front door.
Roji Monster is from Taiwan but Japanese inspired. You'll be greeted by staff in Japanese upon entry.
As you walk in, you're welcomed by the friendly staff at the counter. You will need to order your dessert/s before being shown to your table. The menu is on the wall.
If you're here for the Monster Ice Cream, you'll see on the wall it shows you how to order. You start off by picking the flavour of the ice cream you want by helping yourself to a card on the right of the wall.
They have milk, uji matcha, black s esame, french cocoa and strawberry yoghurt flavour ice creams.
Once you've selected your ice cream flavour, you then select two toppings/sides to go with your ice cream. By doing so, you will need to stamp your card with the toppings you want. Stamps come in both English and Chinese.
This cafe offers two types of seating. You can sit on normal tables and chairs or just behind the black and white lanterns, they have tatami seating which is the Japanese style seating on the floor.
On the table we noticed a card which sits with the serviette and spoon. We thought it was just for decoration until we fiddled with it and flipped it around. It's their business card! It's a pretty cool and cute marketing idea!
This is the matcha monster ice cream with a side of red bean & rice dumpling and honey osmanthus jelly. This was a huge serving of ice cream and it is definitely one for sharing. The matcha is not sweet and still maintains that slight bitter matcha taste which was pretty good. both toppings selected were also delicious and make a good pairing with the ice cream.
Freshly made Roji waffle with matcha cream, vanilla ice cream and maple syrup. The waffle was really good and well enjoyed with the vanilla ice cream. We didn't really like it with the matcha cream or maple syrup so barely touched those.
Drinks were also cuteee! To the left is the matcha latte which was pretty good. Would go back for this drink :) On the right is a drink recommended by the helpful staff at the counter. Its the Hojicha Milk. Hojicha seems to be more of an aquired taste for us? It's got a strong taste which I am not used to. Up until now, I'm thinking if I should have ordered a marshmellow to dunk in to make it a little bit sweeter... but that marshmellow costs $4 for ONE...
Overall, it is a pretty neat, clean, simple but cute cafe with cute monsters. Great place for a small catch up with a small group of friends or even a date. Staff were really nice and were keen to offer us assistance when we had our hands full but needed to return the trays to the kitchen counter. Price wise it can be expensive, depending on what you order and whether you're sharing or not. For example, the monster ice cream is approximately $14 and a drinks arer around $6-8 (prices in AUD).
We were glad we got to try so many things on their menu on our first visit. It was like having a second full course meal. Perhaps if we do come back, we would opt to sharing (yes, it's a bit hard to share dessert hehehe).
