Life Before the Income Tax

Contrary to what many people think, income tax is a rather recent “invention,” created—in most cases—as an emergency tax to deal with extraordinary expenses, which later survived as a way to finance the growing fiscal deficits of Governments increasingly mismanaged, corrupt, and in debt.

I consider myself a libertarian, not an anarchist. As such, I believe that some government is a necessary evil. However, I believe that government should be as small and as local as possible. There is no doubt that the income tax, which was originally unconstitutional, is a big part of why and how the government has grown so large and out of control.
