The horrors of school taxation

in taxes •  8 years ago  (edited)

I recently got into an argument today about immorality of school taxes.  It stemmed from a discussion that I had heard about a school who was going to fund some of its bus expenses via billboards.  The argument was that it was going to lead into more billboards in schools and kids paying more attention to ads than education.  I argued that people could always opt for privately funded education if they didn't like alternative revenue streams.  Back and forth and going nowhere the topic was ended.

Speaking to statists is often a waste of breathe.  They only view things from a limited and pragmatic viewpoint, and very little from a moral and productive one.  I did some math of my own and realized that about 8% of my personal take home (after other taxes) is spent on school taxation.  I have no kids, and really no interest in funding overpaid union thugs who teach skills that are often outdated, and judge progress by government standards.  So I got to thinking, how much does my local school district steal to fund the union thugs vs funding the actual facilities and necessities.

The average salary for my school district is nearly $67,000 per year.  So nearly 8% of my take home is funding people I don't want to employ, who make a lot more than me, and if I refuse, the government will take the home away.  This is absolutely the complete opposite of a moral and voluntary society.  Now our county is about spend several million more dollars to re-assess each property and see what else can be stolen to fund our overpaid teachers.  Just imagine if schools actually had to complete for available revenue from voluntary payees, and teachers were paid on market conditions and price discovery.  I guarantee you salaries would be more in line with equally skilled professionals like myself, and the price spent per student far far less.

I was like most people whose parents forced them to go a public school that I hated nearly every day. I was far more interested in learning dos, unix, basic programming, and reading whatever I wanted on my own. Once I got out of high school, I just worked crap jobs while self-learning enough tech skills to get myself into a decent IT career.
