Today we lost a big one. The new tax bill represents everything that’s wrong with Trump and his Republican enablers
(and the oligarchs behind them) – unbridled greed, utter disdain for the rest of America, and a cynical assumption they can get away with anything by repeatedly lying through their teeth.
We know what comes next. They’ll lie about how great their new tax law is. Then they’ll turn their attention to using the hole it blows in the federal budget to push for cuts Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, and what’s left of the Affordable Care Act. And the corporate lackeys in Trump's administration will continue to slash health, safety, labor, consumer, and environmental protections.
If you’re despairing about what Trump and the Republicans are doing to this country, I understand. But please don’t let your despair turn into cynicism about our ability to turn this around. That’s what they want most of all -- for the rest of us to become so discouraged we give up. At that point, they win it all. We lose our democracy, our economy, our environment, our civil and political rights, our humanity.
So what do we do? As the old saying goes, we throw the bums out. We push to repeal this abominable tax law and replace Trump and the Republicans who voted for it. Repeal and replace.
Last week’s victory in Alabama and the recent victories in Virginia aren’t aberrations. Across America, people are rising against this new tyranny. Starting now we get to work on the midterm elections coming up this November. We flip the House and maybe even the Senate.
