The Sermon on the Mount is a long speech made by Lord Jesus in which the divine teacher laid the foundations of his new spiritual doctrine; although the teachings of the Kingdom of God bear a certain similarity to the sapiential literature of the Old Testament, like the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, or Wisdom, the gratuitousness of the gifts through the faith in Jesus makes this ethical and theological doctrine something completely new.
And in this long speech, which according to the Gospel of Saint Matthew, began the public activity of Jesus, the teacher taught about the importance of listening to and living the word of God. The word of God in the New Testament is basically the wisdom from above, the knowledge of the correct means to live, and what men, as rational beings, do with this word is what determines the path to follow, a life of righteousness ("Do to others what you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12) or a life full of sins.
This is why Jesus warned his disciples and followers not to be carried away by the deception of riches and lust, because just as there is a false treasure, there is also a true treasure, which is the spiritual gift of eternal life, the contemplative life. And in this way Jesus exposed a metaphor about the blessedness of following the word: "Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock" Matthew 7:24. And so, to emphasize his exposition he gave a misfortune about the word: "But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand" Matthew 7:26.
Jesus spoke about how men build their lives. The concealment strategies and sin always have unpredictable consequences, and that is why those who practice error and forget the word build their lives on shaky foundations. But those who live righteously can live safely, because the foundation of their lives is built on science and knowledge, and that is why they are blessed.
Jesus, as the personification of divine perfections, invites men from faith to make an intelligent and wise choice, but the paths are there, and no one can avoid this choice.
