There must be something wrong when a "third-world" country like Panama can beat a first world country. Even living in a tiny town in Panama, I still have access to a stable 30mbps connection. When I lived in a small town in the United States, the maximum speed that I had access to was 5mbps for around the same price that I am paying in Panama.

I know! It's ridiculous.

But we have coal! Everything is fine! :\

My country is one of the smallest and in the middle of Europe and we still don't have whole country covered with ADSL not talking about fiber-optic internet which is only used by the companies and few blocks in the capital. Moreover, we have one of the highest prices of internet/mb in Europe.

Wow. I thought Europe had this sorted. What country are you from?

Unfortunately governments are really bad at doing such a complex rollout. The stupid thing is that I think by now private companies would have had a better result for less money. Australia being a country with such a small population spread over a huge area makes it hard but I totally agree it should have been done in the cities first except they neede a couple of votes from country based independents to get the legislation passed.

Exactly. Plus NBN Co. it will be sold off after 2020. So why not have saved the expense and time wasted and just let the private sector do it in the first place?

It still makes the mind boogle at why they decided to change from the FTTP to other formats. I get that they will be able to reach more houses and premises quicker, but at what cost? Now we will have internet infrastructure that is out of date before it is even finished!!

I am sitting in Virginia in my Virginia ambassador to Australia chair and my blood is boiling. Now if you had NSA OR CIA and you needed to spy on your people or the rest of the world, you would have great internet. All jokes aside the 5G satellites going up in time may solve your problem. Don't expect much from government.

On the plus side, it's probably why hardly any Australian businesses got attacked by the wannacry ransomware. Our internet was too slow!

Hey choo, I wonder how you use electronic records or trading accounts in distant locations?

The internet works great where I live so I don't have any problems accessing anything. I had more problems in Australia than I do now.

Good to hear back from you. I shall follow you to get more knowledge on Australia problems so I can CIA updated.

We got better speeds on Christmas Island with NBN. However considering that it was like one step up from the fast dialup that really, really wasn't hard. That rollout though DX And don't get me started on the "plans".

Lol!

Didn't know Australia has that slow net speed. But why you are using internet explorer anyway?

I'm not. What made you think that?

Pity about Clark. Very fun man.
Mobile internet is getting better though.
Telstra is doing 80GB for $150/month, and 5G will roll out soon, delivering 10x more speed than the NBN.

Yeah that was a shame. RIP.

I still don't understand why you choose how much data you want in Australia. It's more common to pay for the speed and get unlimited data in many other places (with better internet!)

Actually, ignore that. You're talking about mobile data.

Tony Abbott's NBN - Mad as Hell

Nice!

Great post, I just resteemed this one :)
I'm lucky enough to be on fiber optics myself in this neighbourhood and I'm dreading having to move at the end of the year and losing it.. I hope this clusterfuck gets sorted out soon

Thank you!

Don't move. I'm serious.

The owners want to sell the house, we've already been told they wont renew the lease.
And apparently overnight some dickhead has removed a huge section of our back fence, so thats not gonna help things :(

What? Who does that?

No idea, it looks like its been ripped out with huge force the metal is snapped and twisted. Just discovered it this morning

Shit! I hope it doesn't affect your bond money.

Yeah I get the feeling I'm gonna be paying for this, our real estate has been a nightmare in general for a while :o/

I hear ya @choogirl. I'm on the Sunshine Coast and I doubt we will have NBN where we are this decade, so we are reliant on very dodgy ADSL. Seriously, very dodgy! Our ADSL cable is literally cable tied across our carport roof to the fence because our ISP (internet service provider)who is by the way the same as the landline provider)) is too cheap to repair the underground cable... Classic!

Yeah I remember it being bad up there. But like the feds, the Qld Govt is all about "innovation and smart jobs!"

I'm shaking my head at that story, and yet it doesn't surprise me.

It's been nearly 4 years I've adjusted lol

I hear ya! We are in a Telstra only area of Mooloolah, so choice is shall we say limited...so as you know the area we may be better to go back to smoke signals and pigeons rather than wait for NBN. Let's just say I spend quite a bit of time at The Coffee Club lol

I'm in Maroochydore. Prime location. And the NBN is still woefully slow, sometimes non-existent. Before the NBN I was with Optus mobile internet and could see the transmitter from the loungeroom. I was looking at it and not getting internet. This is all just stupid.

Great post! :) Followed!

I was one of the first areas to get proper NBN (FTTP) back when Labor were still in power and it really makes me sad what has happened to the NBN since then. It's an utter shame that the government cares more about clinging onto the old world (coal) than investing in new technologies :(

Lucky you! My guess is you live in Northern NSW. The NBN seems to be pretty good there.

Nah, I'm in Victoria but the NBN in my suburb is all FTTP so it's amazing!

Yep we need to figure out how to get the gains without unacceptable costs.

Omg can completely relate, this bloody NBN is causing more hassels more than anything! And don't even begin to get me started on phone reception.......

You knew that would open the floodgates... During not one of my finer moments, in a support call to Telstra, I explained to the operator that I was "[H]anging off the side of my old Queenslander like an orangutan" and I still couldn't get even one bar of signal... By the way that was 2007 still waiting for them to do something! Officially...

Oh:( It is really terrible ... sit-and-wait, sit-and-wait and so on...

I am on ADSL2+ and seem to get better speeds on a Saturday evening than my family who have NBN 100MB... ITS A JOKE. And I believe soon I will be forced to "upgrade" to NBN as its just been rolled out in my suburb. NOOOOOO :(

its not all bad. I'm in Sydney using a Brisbane NBN supplier and i can't speak highly enough of them. I get great speeds and i never have to ring them. Much, much, much better than iINet on ADSL2.. grrr

Philippines could be much better then :)

It wouldn't be a surprise if it was.

But still its good to visit australia :)

Australia has one of the worst internet speed in the world i think the government here needs to pull there finger out of there ass and fix the problem.

I understand what you spend here is even worse, and if you call say it will solve, nothing further, even to comment here is a sacrifice. The price of the internet is absurd, now the quality does not match the price.

It's pretty embarrassing, NBN really hasn't stepped up anywhere near as much as I was expecting. Good post!

So so true! We have given up on Netflix all together. The buffering was all to much for me.

I was going to look into Netflix but if it's going to put more strain on my cable hanging on the fence. Maybe not lol I'll have to stick with the satellite dish a bit longer...

Thank you for your kind words.

I was already following you. 🌸

awwwwwww thanks baeeee

This is gold ! Well written and I am still giggling at the cleverness and perfect formatting of your post. I should be crying, though, in my own Tasmanian "woop woop" town, where the NBN has been 'advertised" on a shop front for the last 3 years as "NBN is here, now"... or something similar. We are still on ADSL with its few peaks and many lows, but we sure do not want this NBN when it is finally ready. We are aware that NBN is an even worse option than our current ADSL

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words.

Ah, the NBN stories just keep on comin'

@choogirl, I just shared your post in facebook (do not laugh, I know, it is like going back to the pit. Know that I am working at -my way out of there-... asap). I also read your bio, I am definitely following you and resteemed your post. Looking much forward to more of your world traveller articles :-)

Hey, FB still has it's place. There's stuff I'd share on there about my life that I wouldn't put on here. It's all good.

Thanks for your support. I hope to create interesting posts as time goes on. I'm aiming for 1-2 a week at the moment, which seems do-able.

Hey @choogirl please be extremely careful with what you share on FB, even privately through private messaging or especially so!
Personally, I trust stemmit with my entries, my comments, my all around participation in this new community.
Why? Because on the blockchain chain, you own who you are, no-one ever can steal your "user" and impersonnate you. There are a lot of FB people warning their followers of a "stolen FB identities" of late, more than ever, so!
PS: There are many other tech advantages over FB that geeks would explain better than I could ;-)

hey @choogirl : The same issue has been experienced since several years, and still though. I have published something interested that how Isaac Asimov predicted about the Internet in 1875, that come true this Era...

Have read, if you want.

Thanks for the link, I just checked it out now.

Ouch...
