Yep, sometimes you see a good post and subscribe without thinking twice. In a month it doesn't make sense to go to feed, because of sheer amount of crap people produce after just one or two lucky posts. And about good authors leaving... well, I believe we have quite a few problems here, that everyone knows about and all of them hurt the small users.

Yep, like most people, I am concerned about the future of this platform. There are far more serious problems than low content producers leaving that we should be worried about.

I never used my feed in the beginning when I first joined, it was full of junk. But now I've culled my list 3 times since joining. I use my follow list not to just keep tabs on who I like to read on but who may be of interest for future reads and to give my support.
Same as what you have done, some people are inactive and I still keep them there in the off chance they come back. It should be used as a tracking tool rather than popularity as many have done. Having more followers/followings doesn't mean anything if you don't use it right.
Although I am due for another cull soon, depends when I get the chance to go through them all. You went through hundreds, that would have taken quite some time.

Can we get an app that shows how many of the people we are following or being followed by are actually dead? I would find that helpful. My feeds a mess but not as bad as alot of others because I'm still only following 200 some ppl. I do random purges now and then and idc if I get unfollowed for it. I've been thinking the same thing for a while - have been relying on ginabot to tell me when some people post - but that's not very practical.
I'm sure lots of people I initially followed have changed what they are posting too (though I'm guilty of that).
As for inactivity, I understand people go through periods of not having the motivation to post, but I suspect the churn on users is quite high, so anyone who is inactive for more than a month might not be coming back.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I'm not against people changing their content. Theoretically, that should expose you to a wider variety of people and thus a net increase in followers, which is good. It's more people posting for the sake of posting and lowering the quality of their blog that annoys me.
I think the churn rate is high too. People are all excited and enthusiastic in the beginning but when they don't see the big bucks and the ideas run dry and they haven't built any relationships, they leave. C'est la vie I guess.

I went and did the same thing a few days ago as well. When I started on Steemit I would follow anyone back who followed me, but it was a bad move because it meant my feed was being clogged up with some serious spammy content, I was following around 600+ people. I was seeing it all, including a couple of accounts posting some weird NSFW hentai content and stock photos masquerading as original content.
I have now trimmed my followers down to just 60 and might even go further soon. Steemit is already a pretty overwhelming place as it is, I am starting to get picky about the content I see in my feed, I have a zero tolerance for spam and I either flag it or report it to Steem Cleaners if it warrants it. You don't realise just how much shit is on Steemit until you have so many followers you inevitably end up following some of these accounts.

So true about the filling up tge feed with unwanted content and missing out on the posts that are actually interesting to you. Some people ive been following have started to resteem so many posts that fill up my feed with content i wasnt interested in the first place. When someone follows you its because you give them what they are interested in so one should stick to what their audience wants and why they followed you in the first place.
Thats why ive unfollowed a few myself recently..
By the way, if someone unfollows you or mutes you, dont take it personal... (as i used to!😄) just be happy knowing that you have many others that stick with u because they enjoy your work. Whoever doesnt- thats fine! 🤗

But as a show researcher for pennsif I've now found that I don't see as much new stuff coming through, so I'm going to have to go digging. Ah well, swings & roundabouts lol.
The one thing I wish we could do is unhook those spammer-types from following US. They certainly bring the numbers up and help push you up a level but it is a false positive IMO.

I think it's important to follow people you want to follow, not because you feel obligated or because they follow you. I have the same thing on Instagram where I don't follow people just because they follow me or because I've had even the slightest interaction with them.
If you ever decide to stop following me, I'll completely understand. Even if I'm still producing content I think is great, why should you have to be interested in seeing it? There are lots of people on here that produce top-notch content, but it's just not my thing.
Clean out the clutter, don't follow-4-follow.

Yeah I've thought about that, but given I also have a bunch of SQL queries for curie including people I 'follow' on there but not here, so I don't don't worry about, cos I'm likely to pick them up there. Probably a bit different if you're not doing most of your curating from SQL though.

It is REALLY easy to click the follow button. Sometimes I follow because I know I might like the content but don’t have time to dive into it immediately - but then when the person posts I don’t really ‘know’ who posts it and I skip the blog in order to curate my fav Steemians - thus never getting to know that other awesome Steemian, haha.
Fascinating stuff. Cleaning up and actually following favs is a good thing :-) Enjoy your clean timeline ;-)

I get around that since I do a lot of curating via SQL queries. I have lists on there of people I follow or who have good potential (for curie) who make great content but it's not really my thing. However, I will follow them on steemit if I like them.

Yeah, it can be political, but at the same time, most follows don't necessarily translate to votes, so it shouldn't be. I have a half written post about that. I had a fully written post but steemit ate it and I haven't got around to rewriting it.

I think this approach is sensible, choo ! ...... I'm 100% with you, to be honest ! I like that you're showing an example to others on how to be a good Steemian, in fact. I mean, the success of this platform depends on the quality of posts originated in it and inactive people, shitposters/spammers, and other riffraff isn't going to up the quality of Steemit as a platform...
...As for the final category of people who post quality content who doesn't intersect with choo's interests, well, that's just how life is ! None of us is interested in absolutely everything everyone else is into, so I think that's a fair call, as well :>

I've seen a lot of folks doing the 'follow' housecleaning lately, and while it's empowering, it's also slightly frustrating that we can't organize our feed better amongst topics or priorities or 'people we really like' and 'people we kinda like' and 'people we don't know why we follow but we still follow them anyway because sometimes they upvote us and we don't want them to rage-unfollow if we houseclean them into the trash'.

I started doing this recently, too. Now I've only looked at a third of my subscriptions. Indeed, many of these accounts are already inactive. Mostly it was people who started out at the same time as me. But they quickly gave up. Indeed, Steemit loves resistant and ready to work to go ahead. It's just that nothing happens. Diamonds don't fall from the sky. And success requires determination. It is a pity that many users are not ready for this. And go here in the hope of getting easy money for nothing. It is a pity that some quickly give up. Among the inactive accounts were those whose content is interesting. And they had to go on, but they gave up.

I do that regularly, randomly pick out followers particarly the names that look unfamiliar and see if i should still follow them . I came to a similar conclusion about the folks I originally followed when it came to inactivity or changes in content. I've been through my followers list a number of time since I've started, trying to get a good mix of posts I like and folks who will engage not only on their posts, but on mine. I probably still need to expand the numbers, but I like my list a lot more than I did to begin with, and it's because of the trimming. You're right—there's only so much we can realistically follow, and we don't do anyone any service to just follow without interacting. If only we could pick our followers, too! Not sure how that would work, but there's so many inactive accounts among the followers it's not funny.

I didn’t realize you looked at everything coming through TA and your other responsibilities. I feel bad putting you in the did not read basket, considering your workload.
What really annoyed me was that when I first decided to cull my follow list was two people immediately took note of it. I used it as a way to bookmark people I wanted to check out and various other reasons. I’m extremely forgetful. Both had a lot of influence and so much more love than a lot of steemian. I’ll never understand why one little unfollow from a nobody needs to be noted.
I’m going to follow you. I’ve been resisting because I didn’t want you to think I was after your curie powers. I make a point of not following some influential accounts because I don’t like it seen as sucking up. But then I miss out on these types of post.
(Oh, I also left the TA servers (and many others) in a fit of self-rage, I was just sick of me complaining about all the stuff I don’t like. I hope I can return when I feel nicer)

Hahaha. Rage quitting discord. Well, you are welcome back any time. I do auto-upvote people and I follow the centerlink trail, so I do end up upvoting most of the TA stuff. But I also like to see what people are producing and will adjust my vote accordingly. Some is more of a skim than a detailed read though. Lol, I have various SQL lists for finding curie posts Linny, and your posts meet the criteria, they'll show up in my searches. Don't worry, I don't think you're sucking up for curie.

Well, I’m glad I can come back, I raged left and then thought, oh-oh...Now I can’t message Choo to make sure I can actually return. This stuff happens when I get severely sick of myself. For now I’m limiting myself to TWB, but only so I can refocus on writing.
Regardless of whether you personally read or skim, considering the amount of content you must cover on top of having time for what you enjoy, it’s phenomenal. I never properly considered the scope of your steemit efforts until this post. I’ll be more appreciative whenever I make it on your autovotes now, even if it’s by default. 😊
And you would not believe the relief I feel to just be able to follow you without my previous concern. Your value to me isn’t curie. Your value is that I know I can get an honest opinion on stuff, that you’d try to help a TA noob to the best of your knowledge.
No need to respond to this, you’re a busy lady.
Take care!
Linny

I wouldn't know if someone had unfollowed me (or followed for that matter)! Probably better that way. Not something I want to dwell on too much. I'm resigning myself to the fact that I don't really have the time to focus too much on social media. I think I've got more people unfollowing than following on Instagram at the moment...

Pfff instagram. I hardly ever go on their anymore. To the point they send me emails telling things I might have missed/ be interested in. Yeah, there's no point dwelling on it. People unfollow for different reasons. Plus follows doesn't = votes anyway

a very interesting opinion, and I share your point of view completely
when I have just come to Steemit, I tried to be very active in searching for people whom I would follow, and all who had more reputation and SP were my stars:)
I was just lost here, and I had to friends to ask for a piece of advice:)
then after some months I started to clean my list of people, whom I follow, and I was shocked how many of them I deleted without any regret because....and here the same reasons as you've mentioned:)
now my cleaning is still in process because it takes much time, but it's useful
now I'm more careful in my choice:)
but I like your blog and style, and you're in my list now:))
Let's get acquanted, I'm Talia:)

I think I'll do the same at some point, so this experience of yours will help making that decision. As I am newbie here (or Plankton as salled on Busy.org), I am currently still following few more people then I usually would, so I can get wider picture of the Steemit platform.

I think a lot of people start off this way since it's not like Facebook where you join and know a whole bunch of people already. On steemit it takes a while to find the people whose content you like.

Been meaning to do this for a while now, my feed is chock-a-block with
From my steemengine.net days as a newbie, in fact, I can't remember the last time I checked my feed, maybe it's time I went for a spring clean too!

How did I miss this? runs to check if I didn’t accidentally push mute? I can’t believe I missed this post, but I didn’t mute you. Every so often I check my follower list too. I try to keep it at 100. That way I can engage and check up on people. My rule is if they haven’t posted in a month then I unfollow.

Reality is this whole full time job situation. I don’t understand why they don’t let me be on steem while I am at work and when I have no work.

Wow, you looked at every users profile who you unfollowed! That’s awesome. I’m thinking of doing the same thing. I don’t want to redact any support for anyone but I’d like to recognize everyone on my list. I’d especially like to get rid of the people who never read comment or upvote on my posts and who I added early on because we were the same generation of minnows. I may make a few preemptive posts allowing people to introduce themselves to avoid an unfollow if they notice my post.

Well so far, no one has revenge unfollowed me except the one person I mentioned. Yeah, a lot of the people I unfollowed were people I'd just randomly followed at the beginning for whatever. Many weren't adding much value to feed. It's actually much better now so I don't regret doing it.

I don't follow many but I keep looking them up to see what is going on. You're doing an awesome job with @teamaustralia. Also we have seen you have been upvoting and supporting heaps of entries to our @howtoweekly contest. We are so appreciative of that for our contestants and we are happy to have created a popular contest to bring quality content to the platform. Thanks heaps @choogirl for your support!
