No Kid should go to school Hungry.jpg

I heard an article on the radio this morning that was saying thousands of kids every day are going to school hungry. As a father this makes me furious. I know what its like to be tight on money, we've all been there. But if it came down to me eating or my kids, I know I'd be skipping my dinners so that they can eat.

According to the Herals Sun the local foodbank is providing up to 1700 breakfasts a week to kids at 15 local schools just in the Greater Dandenong region.

Below I'm going to feed your kid for less than $10 for the week.

So we now have weetbix and milk for breakfast, bread, butter and jam for lunch and for a snack a muesli bar all this for only $8.35. Now I know this isn't the heathiest of lunches, theres no whole grains its not vegan or gluten free, the GI Index may not be great. But seriously who cares, there is fuel in your kids belly to allow them to learn and survive at school. If any parent tells me that they cant afford $8 a week to feed their kids, they should be locked up.

The beauty of this is also that the kids can make this themselves. My 5yr old girl can make her own sandwich and will often make her own lunch. Not because I'm lazy of course, she thinks its fun. But still if a child is hungry and knows that they can't rely on their parents, at least give the kids to tools to fend for themselves.

I hope this was helpful, be sure to comment and resteem if you liked this, any support is greatly appreciated.

This rationale is exactly why I don't have so much as a cat or dog. If I can't afford to feed myself on a regular basis, what right do I have to allow a cat, dog, emu, or child go hungry?

Very well said, and best of luck!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Exactly the same opinion as me. I'd love to have more kids, but cant afford them so I keep my pants on :)

thanks again.

then imaging what i feel been near my 30's and not been able to EVEN live alone ... i've been wanting a kid for a while now ... what is stoping me you may be thinking ... well ... i live in Venezuela :3 land of the hunger

I always went to school hungry but it had nothing to do with money. When I was too young to make my own breakfast my mother insisted on hot milk + soggy cornflakes which, to me, tasted like puke or failing that, mostly burned toast. My siblings ate breakfast because they actually enjoyed the crap she labelled, "breakfast".
By high school I was so used to not eating breakfast that I just didn't make time for it and my mother didn't get up until I'd left for school, so she didn't say anything. I got into the habit of eating bowls of cereal before bed but then I wouldn't eat until 1 pm at school. So, overall I had plenty of calories but I had poor concentration at school; I was dizzy often and had low bp.

title also works without last word

haha at times i do agree.

in which country is it happened?

This is in Australia, but it happens in Britain and America as well.

I'm sorry but just cannot imagine this situation. It's just an absurd.
Russia is a very poor country there people have salary average $500 in a month. But I really cannot imagine a situation then somebody wouldn't feed his/her child.

Do you hate your kids?

exactly my point!! Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Spot on mate. There's no excuse. The local high school and primary school down here provides sandwiches and fruit, which is great, but they really shouldn't need to do it in the first place.

Having said that, my little brother refuses to eat breakfast and half the time comes home with a full lunch box lol

Exactly, they shouldn't have to.

At least he's going to school with food, and the option for breakfast if he wants it.

Yeah exactly, what they do from there is up to them, but they at least need the option.

I don't know what's wrong with him though, he refuses lunch money too ... when I was young whole MO was getting that Pizza Rounder and Chicken and Corn Roll cash ... supermarket ones just don't cut it

I used to get the cash, and still go hungry and put it in for school banking. Still have no idea why I'm still so broke though.

I was a hustler. I'd get 10 bucks on Monday for the week. Once I jumped off the school train, I'd procure the services of a senior with stubble and undershirt who would procure the highly sought after Winnie Blues. 5 for myself, 5 for the senior, leaving 15 durries to sell to the less industrious smoking children for $1 a pop ...

That's my smokes for the day sorted, $5 profit for lunch and $10 for the next pack = canteen lunch and durries every day of the week from an investment of $10 in lunch money.

Hard to put a dollar value on the respect earned round the back of the basketball courts too :P

amen brother. Gotta earn respect with blood and a black eye at times. Even if you lost you were so much more respected for standing up for yourself.

Grest post..upvoted and resteemed

thank you very much, I appreciate it.

I like how you really got to the point. Also incorporating kids into making their own lunch. Why isn't this a thing?

Yes Sir indeed. There was a boy in my class when i was in 8th. They were poor so his mother was not able to give him some pocket money or some thing to eat. All the boys from our gathering share meal with him so didn't feel any inferiority. Poor lad i miss him alot. He was a fine boy though

you're a good person, this makes me happy.

Some places in the world(e.g Africa) still allow kids to go to school hungry!
This is hard to believe, but its a fact.

Thank you

It is sad in how many schools there are children who maybe have ine decent meal a day,

It certainly is sad. Thanks for the vote and the resteem I appreciate it

I work at a school that provides 100% free breakfast and lunch. We start our day by having breakfast in the class. We also have a local food bank that comes twice a month to provide food baskets to over half of our families in the community.

For me still put the child's food from the food for me, no matter how much I spend money to buy food for children. Looking for money is difficult but for children and wives should be my priority.

Exactly

I feel for struggling parents, not being able to feed your kids must be soul destoying. Shelter and food should be the first priority, phones, TVs etc should be way down the list but I suspect with some it isn't.
Good post buddy.

Great article. I agree! Thank you.
