Mr Squiggle coins from the Royal Australian Mint

in teamaustralia •  6 years ago

So today I picked myself up some of the Mr Squiggle collectors sets.
Lol when I went to the front counter of Woolworths and asked for them, the lady at the counter gave me a strange look. Probably because I'm a scary looking biker coming up to the counter asking for Mr Squiggle collectors sets, so when she grabbed them and placed them on the counter in front of me I slipped in the old "Gee the kids are going to love these, they collect special coins" Although really they are for me :D
I'm glad I jumped on these quick, as I had to visit three stores before I found some as they were selling like hot cakes.

I'm rather impressed with the minting of these coins, they are really great quality and have some great details to them. I really love the use of colour on the two dollar coins too which gives them quite a unique touch.
I have been a collector of special coins not for a couple of years, so when I saw these sets for sale I couldn't help but grab two of them.
I think every kid growing up in Australia has watched Mr Squiggle, he is kind of like a household legend. I always loved Bill the steam shovel, he would tell jokes and riddles and dutch out the place with powder from his nose.

Here is a clip of Bill the steam shovel.

Here is what the collectors album looks like on the front cover, as you can see it's very kids like but that was the whole point of Mr Squiggle as he was a kids show.
The 1 cent limited edition coin is visible on the front, and is the moon from Mr Squiggle which was Mr Squiggles home planet.

This is what the 1 cent coin looks like up close, as you can see the detail on this is rather nice.

This is what the book looks like from left to right, on the left side you can see the back of the 1 cent coin and on the right side you have the other six limited edition minted coins with some technical information about the make of the coins, metal, weight etc.
On the left side it has a description about Mr Squiggle which reads:

Generations of Australians have grown up with Mr Squiggle and his friends; Blackboard, Bill Steamshovel and Gus the Snail. From his home on the Moon, Mr Squiggle would visit Earth in his Rocket to entertain children with his gentle whimsy and wonderful talent for turning their squiggles into pictures with his pencil nose.
Created by cartoonist and puppeteer Norman Hetherington, the children's television series Mr Squiggle between 1959 and 1999. At it's height, Mr Squiggle was one of the most popular children's programs in Australia, receiving many thousands of squiggles each year from children around Australia.
The Royal Australian Mint invites you for a trip down memory lane with this very special coin set to celebrate Mr Squiggle and his friends, and to with Mr Squiggle a very happy 60th birthday.

Here are some nice close ups of the coins.
First up we have the Mr Squiggle two dollar coin, I really love the detail that has gone into this coin and those little rockets.

Next up we have my favorite two dollar coin which is Bill the Steamshovel. I really love the way they have done the little puffs of smoke on the sides.

Next up we have good old Blackboard, this coin doesn't have quite the same detail as the other coins but that's because black board never had much detail to him.

The last of the two dollar coins is Gus the Snail, which has some really nice detail to it also.

Then they also made two different dollar coins.
Both of these coins really looks quite striking with some incredible detail to them.

Even the Queen's head on the back of these coins has got the makeover.
Has anyone else picked up a set of these at all?

They do look really cool. I collect the coloured $2 coins when I find them in my change, but I doubt I will be lucky enough to get this set. My favourite character was Bill the steam shovel by the way.

First I've heard of them, tho not surprising since I don't hail from there. Coin collecting in general is great and especially so when it brings back something beloved from your childhood! Congrats on the acquisition!

Yeah they only got released a day or two ago, so I thought I would get them :)
I dont know why, but I like collecting coins

So cool Gus is on a coin 😊😊 I got the Mr squiggle $2 coin in my change today. Fingers crossed I come across the Gus $2 coin 🤞

Yeah I got Mr Squiggle the other day, but impatient me can't wait to collect the set lol.
Plus I get a sweet booklet :D

Haha true that. They didn't have any sets at the woollies I went to today. So I'm just going to have to keep an eye out in my change. The booklet is pretty sweet

Bugger. I just came back from woolies. I didn’t even know about this set. I hope they have some left in the morning.

You can get them online if they sell out, try to go to a store where not many people go so a not so built up area. Or the ghetto which is where I got mine from, as I knew they would have some left lol
