Gardening with Ed. Seed saving Tuesday. Am I doing it right?

in teamcanada •  7 years ago

Well some of the plants in my garden have run their cycle and are now going to seed. I'm going to attempt to save some for next year.
We picked these beauties tonight, theres plenty more still.

I intentionally let some peas go past their best before date.

Just open them up and they are rock hard.

The bag is not sealed. You need to ensure they are all fully dry before storing any seeds.

The spinach has all dried up and the seeds are ready to be harvested.

Im still waiting for the thyme to be ready.

My grapes are almost fully ripe. Just a few more days and they will be nice and sweet. I'll try to save a few seeds from these too.

Did I do it right? No really I don't know for sure...

Great job Ed!! All looks amazing. Most people would probably be horrified with the way I save tomato seeds...I just squirt the inner juice/seeds onto paper towel, let it dry and then ziplock bag up the dried paper towel. When planting I just rip pieces off the paper towel and plant it whole like that LOL!!

Thanks for the tomato seed tip, and the kind words. See you later!

It appears that you have a bless hand to have picked all those beautiful vegetables nothing seems wrong with that

Thanks.

Nice Grapes! Steem and Stack On...

They're tiny but yummy.

Looks about right..I'm no expert tho. Nice looking toms there

Loves me some fresh tomatoes.

I'm sure you use worm castings on your garden for a better taste!

Nope. I do compost everything I can though. And this year I put some drywall crumbs in to up my calcium levels.

Good job, worm poo is 1000times better than compost, maybe give it a go...feed the compost to the worms they love it!!

Nice grapes. How old are the vines? I have some that are two years old and I still have no grapes. I guess they don't like where I planted them. LOL

I've had this plant for 3 years, and it was probally a year old at the nursery when I bought it. Valient is the variety. I put in another variety(can't remember the name) this spring beside this one and it hasn't grown at all yet.

Perhaps they are like fruit trees and need to be older before they produce fruit?

Do you remember what variety they are? Mine had small grapes on them when I bought them.

I don't recall ever getting a name from the nursery here. Nurseries buy plants from several sources and sell them as is. Nothing fancy here LOL

Awsome job Ed my fellow Canadian. Wow love your grapes. Upvoted

Hey thanks!

Saving seeds of fruit and veg that you like is definitely the way to go! Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I had no idea what spinach seeds looked like on the plant!

Good job saving seeds. This is one area I need to work at.I'm trying not to buy hybrid seeds anymore and began saving seeds from a few plants last year but plan on increasing in that area this year.

It's quite easy. Some years I completely forget to do it.
