Sabah Steemit meet-up: Ideas for community projects

I am probably the 100th post on a very awesome Steemit meet-up in Sabah. I got to meet the community of Steemians around me for the first time, with the legendary big brother @bitrocker2020 giving an in-depth tutorial and introduction to what Steemit is.

The image below is sourced from @bitrocker2020.

While many have posted on the Durian party and how much they have learnt from the project, I thought that I would go a different route and pick on something else that was intriguing to me when I went to the meet-up. That is the ability of Steemit to impact the underprivileged community. Let's be real here, when you talk about Steemit, there is no running away from talking about the monetary potential of it. However, that potential can also be used for a good cause, pooling our creative talents into generating money to help the needy.

Where do we start?

I have been teaching in Sabah for seven years. Throughout that time, I have met many students who are incredibly talented in music and art. Any opportunity that can involve the incorporation of song and dance, and you will see the entire classroom atmosphere change. The problem with this talent? There is not many ways for them to showcase it. I have met designers who had to strive and work hard just to get that limited amount of exposure, but never really seeing monetary success.

Steemit can be the answer to this, with a community like teammalaysia to support such creative minds, a normal artist who would've needed to work for free, would at least get 0.50 to potentially 10 dollars of payout. I said 50 cents because that's my current voting power =). But let's be positive, shall we? Now imagine if that particular artist received 10 dollars, that's 7.50 minus curation payout.

With a 50/50 payout, that artist would receive 3.75 Steem dollars. After a month of posting daily, that would be 112.50 Steem dollars. Converted to Ringgit, that would be in the ball park of RM3000. Not bad for doing what you like, is it not?

How do we go from there?

I propose the introduction and workshop for artists, singers and anyone in the creative industry. I propose a small token fee to help support the initiative further down the road, to sustain it for more people to come aboard, and to be a part of it. While the fine details can be worked out eventually. So how can this be used to impact the larger community?

I have been a part of some programs that has helped with education with students who lack access to the internet. This impedes their ability to gain access to knowledge that could help them in learning. Education is power and it is through this, that the creative minds who were helped by the proposed workshop earlier on, can help. These individuals who would've seen some success in Steemit after some time can help in organizing and contributing to funds. These funds can be used to purchase equipment such as computers and equipment. Equipment that can help these students gain access to materials on the Internet for learning.

This is just a thought of mine and I am sure the Sabah community can definitely refine this. It was awesome meeting all of you, until the next meet-up in Labuan. Perhaps someone from Labuan would bring Chocolate and Drinks instead of Durian.

Awesome stuff ... count me in bro .. will definately be in for this ..

Cool, and yes Steemit can actually elevate those underpaid artists to a well paid condition. In a bigger scale of impact, it may even help people away from poverty!

Excellent. You have articulated it well @alvinauh.
Deep inside, we are more than prepared to help who ever in need.
If we consistently hold that belief, it will eventually lead us to the right place.
I believe, to most steemians, steemit platform has shown them the way, like a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you for sharing.

I agree with you. Steemit has changed the way how opportunities are being distributed. With the platform and the support from the community, we can empower a lot of people and create a sustainable supporting system within the community.

Agree bro, steemit is the right platform for these communities , just like sandbox but specific in sabah creative industry. .. Surely this worth exploring.

Awesome idea @alvinauh. Tell you something that you might be interested...we are in the Socio Cultural & Education Cluster is focusing on the Creatine Industry as our main focus. In our Masterplan we do have something similar to this program. Since you've brought up this agenda, allow me to suggest you to sync this idea with SCE BIMPEAGA.
Btw, BIMPEAGA stands for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area. I'm the current chair for the SCE cluster.
We can discuss. Cheers!

The main problem even I face is promoting my music. Producing the music is fine but then when it comes to marketing, it's really hard to market yourself when there are people with huge bank accounts ahead of you. I'm not saying they are doing something wrong but then what would you even do in this position?

I can't speak for all musicians as I am not one nor have I been in that position, so do excuse my idealism. But I have a good friend who is an artist and had to claw her way to recognition. She's now doing very well, but it took her 8 years. I think with Steemit, we can lessen that time and at least allow more creative individuals to get paid while doing something they love until they get recognized. I hope that helps, thank you for your feedback

Great idea and i totally agree..and maybe want to join you workshop too..as a volunteer..Lol.😬
