SCAMS | How to spot it and how to deal with it in Malaysia ?

in teammalaysia •  7 years ago

Today 16th Jan 2018

A lot of people lost a lot of money as Bitconnect.co was taken offline for hours and then bitconnect made an announcement saying they had to close down their services mainly due to :-

  • Legal issues ( govt asked them to shut down )
  • DDoS attacks

Having invested a small tiny amount of money in this well known ponzi scheme ( for the sake of research ) , I literally made back whatever I invested within weeks. So there was no real lost for me as I was just rolling with the profits generated. However there were others who continued pumping their hard earned FIAT into it and lost a whole lot of $$$.

Got this screen shot shared in discord

This guy apparently has lost $500k and that was from funds which he took loans from and then because of that lost, he was thinking of taking another 5 mil just to cover up the lost.

This in my honest opinion is plain stupidity and is literally gambling !

Hope that none of you would ever fall into this financial trap as it would just not end up good.

SCAMs everywhere

There is a sucker born every minute

Its being said that Malaysia is one of the biggest adoption of "Money Game" schemes and its sad but true we as Malaysians has become very sceptical on any "investments" which sounds too good to be true.

Could you imagine the stares and rejection which I got when I first started talking about STEEMIT ? I'm sure that I'm not alone on this as the concept of making $$$ from just writing is just too good to be true.

Anyhow, since you are reading this article here on Steemit / Busy / eSteem ... you are one audience which I do not require to convince that Steemit is real ! Its not always about the money which motivates us, however its the platform and the community which we involve ourselves in on this platform.

How to report a scam in Malaysia

Back to the topic ... since there is so many scams that we see in Malaysia . How do we actually report a scam ?

If you have been a victim of financial schemes and need advise or report. You need to report it to Bank Negara Malaysia.

BNMTELELINK (Call Centre)
Tel.: 1-300-88-5465 (1-300-88-LINK)
Fax: 03-2174 1515
You could also SMS to 15888 : BNM TANYA [your report / query]
Or email directly to [email protected]

You could also walk in to

BNMLINK
Ground Floor, D Block,
Bank Negara Malaysia,
Jalan Dato' Onn
50480 Kuala Lumpur
Operating Hours: 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. (Monday - Friday)

What if I want to report about scams online ?

You would require proof of conversation with the owner of the online site prior to lodging any complains. Remember speculative accusations will usually be ignored. Once you got proof you can then file a complain directly to Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s Consumer Complaints Bureau

http://aduan.skmm.gov.my/

MCMC will acknowledge receipt of your complaint with reference number within 3 days of receiving the complaint (verification of complaints through MCMC Consumer Complaints Bureau portal will be done in 1 day). You will receive answers pertaining to the result of MCMC's investigation within 15 days from the date of complaint received.

What can I complain about ?

From websites content to even your internet is not up to what is promised by the telco's in Malaysia ( yes i have personally made this complain before and action was taken )

Since MCMC is not the only agency that can investigate your complains, you can also complain to relevant authorities like PDRM, KPDNKK, BNM and other related enforcement agencies. Due to laws restricting it to Malaysian laws, our complains on International Websites may be hard as it does not falls in the laws of Malaysia.

How to spot a scam ?

These are just ways which I look at and I'm no expert in it but after having tried out a few ( again for research purpose ) here are my top signs that raises red flags of being a scam.

  • You need to invest upfront with promises of really high returns .
  • There is always an affiliate fee
  • There is no real description on what the actual product is except they have some amazing money generating system
  • All the Team Members does not have actual profiles ( there is no link to their social media accounts )

Summary

Do make sure that you do your due diligence before making any investments especially if meants taking your fiat currency to use as an investment. There are a lot of schemes out there just trying to take away your money.

Thank you for writing this. Shared on FB as well. I know I have a few guillible friends on FB. Hope it helps them to understand better. Thank you bradah

Ur welcome bro !

As long as there are gullible people, there will be scamm'ers. Sad, but that is reality.
This reminds of th FxUnited scam, i recall friend and family taking loan to buy in.

Beware everyone.

Greed never wins...

the infamous FX United ... which said they had some awesome system in NZ and shitz . People pump in huge capital for that. Last I heard that they paid ppl in BTC

hahah fx united the famous one

thanks for the info! it's really useful for us! before that i also trap in this kind of scam and lose a bit money..but fortunately i only invest few hundred just want to see is it really will get return from it? but finally i get to know this kind of investment is really a trap! dun fall into it!

I remember the first scam in which I fell was when I was 14 years and while I was on the web I got a spam ad "You won $100,000" they asked for my credit card data, and as logically I not had, i stolen one of my parents... The following was the eternal punishment. After many more scams, I became skeptical and when I spoke of Steemit also thought "too good to be true", now I'm hovering in the cryptocurrencies but I'm still cautious lol

ouch .. i can imagine the heat you got from ur parents

Well I think they should have forgotten, after all have been more than 10 years lol

Hmmm, I started my journey in crypto and I gotta credit this to the first money game I took part. Tho I ended up losing money with it haha.

there is one promoter called sahifulrahmat on youtube...he shilled all ponzi coins..basically the trevon james of malaysia

Now this shows how careful you have to be... Don't rush into things but be patient till you're sure it isn't a scam. Get your informations correct and make sure you don't end up like this poor guy.

its big scam
we don't expect it

There's like only a few people out there on the Internet that I trust when it comes to cryptocurrency.

And they all said that Bitconnect is a scam.

I'm really sorry for all the people that believe paid Youtubers.

Good thing that I trusted right people with this one.

Yea .. it was a very well organized ponzi

Scam memang banyak around Malaysia, also in the forms' of coins.

Hahah .. so many frm crypto to even perfumes . We've seen it all. I've even seen one Ponzi which sells ads on their mobile app . Literally they created an app to display ads . MLM that and then sell at about 5k for ads space . And ppl buy in to that shit

Wah, haven't encountered those before... really pattern banyak.
The characteristics that you listed are definitely reliable. Especially so much upfront and with no solid business background to show. MLM may not be scam, but I can say all scam use MLM to disperse.

they play all sorts of ponzi coins...last time is bitconnect... now davorcoin, lendconnect, ucoincash, unix and the list goes on and on...you should write an article what lending websites to avoid sir ...i am happy to help

i am in a group with those ponzi playing people...they play all sorts of ponzi coins...i told them get off now they wont listen...they dont even know what is ponzi...so naive and stupid...couldnt laugh any better now

You did your part and even better if you could document that down. Greed does a lot of magic to people.

naive people we cant do anything...they never want to know about blockchain or the tech behind these things....i felt terrible for those who get burned

we did our part by warning :)

And reporting that to the government what can they do for you? Lolz. But thanks for the advice.

It's not what they can do for me ... But hope that they can take action on at least banning the scam site to prevent others to fall prey.

Dude do you know how many sites they have to ban then. haha. Crypto is full of scams.. I just pray that BNM won't ban bitcoin trading lol. They already gave us big trouble with luno.

Cuz someone complained about those sites that's why it was banned. I'm in total agreement that there are tons of scams out there . Look bitkingdom was one of the big one which recently shut down . BNM can't really ban btc trades as peer to peer trades will always exist . It was told to me that BNM is conducting forums to understand better how to tax ppl for capital gains thru cryptoshare. It's unfortunate for Luno .. it was exactly like what happened to coinbox previously . But with p2p traders out there , it's close to impossible to ban trading

Its good informative post. Its big scam and will give more results. Thanks for sharing the idea and information for the steemeans.

Good read, and great tips on what to look out for. Great info. tqs

Oh my God, what happen with Malaysia?

Before this pernah kena dengan ethrade haha.

Sakit bro ..

That is why I was a bit sceptical about Cryptocurrencies before I joined Steemit. All the hooss and haass about it and their aggressive marketing techniques makes me wondered if it worth to try. Some so called friends kept on hassling me to invest, I was tempted at first but luckily I didn't. I changed my mind when they asked for an upfront payments more than what I was willing to fork out. Thank you for sharing this @bitrocker2020.

Good info bos.. thanks

Indeed scammers everywhere.. i have heard about complaining to MCMC but never exactly know how it works. This made it a bit more clearer which channel to go to, cos these days, there are so many unknown 5 digit numbers kept sending SMS.. can we complain those as well when it gets too much?

This is one post everyone should read.

When it comes to schemes like these Malaysians are either sceptical or fall straight into them. A lot of ideas get shunned even before people listen to them - take Steemit and some genuine MLM for example.

By the way when I was at your presentation on Steemit, you seem like a regular Joe kind of guy, and when @angiechin28 and @maverickfoo mentioned that they are on Steemit as well I was sold.

Thank goodness you guys are not scammers! 😜

Wow what the hell the guy claims to have lost $500k! Yes indeed I have the same opinion that is just crazy or well stupid, but great guide for those who got scammed on what they should do and this is why I keep emails of certain companies incase they scam me @bitrocker2020

Last week i just kena one bugger , chinese guy, told me he has 80 pax coming to my Fireflies River Cruise , i say wonderful, but i have help him pay some payment to this account, then ask me to this Famous Seafood Supplier in KK to collect the payment, he say this supplier owe him money . Hahahaha... luckily my i realize this is scam ... i close his call, he keep calling , i just block his number the next minute .. wasted 3minutes of my life talking to him...

I'd usually research the withdrawal aspect of a platform before putting hard earned money in a risky investment. To think that I was this close to actually trying out the bitconnect and Luno platform! Guess you can never be too careful... or can you? xD

Anyhow Thanks for this informative post! :)

@bitrocker2020, thanks for sharing great information about how to spot a scam.

Although the reporting information is very specific to Malaysia, the call to do due diligence is for all of us.

I lived in Indonesia for over 10 years. So when I hear from people on that side of the world I get excited. I am glad to hear that the Steemit community is growing in both Malaysia and Indonesia. I just wish I would have joined Steemit before I returned back to the United States so I could have shared more with my teman akrab di Indonesia.

Blessings,
@sumatranate

Thanks @bitrocker2020 for sharing these info with us coz i just joined yesterday. I already been rejected when i intro steemit to someone close to me. He also told me that it might be a scam. So sad when i heard it but i do believe that STEEMIT is different. I will prove it to him, I will keep learning.
I will follow you and hope to read more articles from you to increase my steemit knowledge.

thanks for sharing. scams are so common nowadays :(

Good pointers on spotting scam. With all due diligence, as the saying goes, "do not spend money you are unwilling to part with." If it reaps, great, if it does not, at least lesson learned.

Thank you for sharing.

A good reminder and advice for all. A lot of scammers out there.

Thank you.
