Hello Steemians,
Have you ever accidentally watch a sports channel in tv and it was playing a golf tournament live?
Then out of curiosity you just watched for about 5 minutes since you never even seen a golf tournament before.
But then you only hear the commentators start talking gibberish about greens, birdies and bogeys when they are commentating and you have absolutely no idea what they are talking about!
Well no fear, for i am here to enlighten the masses and you on GOLF JARGONS.
Lets hop on straight into it now!
Scoring
First ill talk about the scoring lingo that is used in golf. But before that lets recap on how scores are tabulated in golf.
Basically golf takes its score by the amount of strokes or hit that a golfer makes in a round of golf and must makes lesser strokes than the benchmark of the course (which is called a par). When a golfer plays lower than par he is playing well and vice versa. Usually the amount of par for a professional tournament is between 70 to 72.
Here is a rundown of the golf scoring terms
Par
Par is a term derived from the stock exchange. Every hole on a golf course has a par value. It refers to the number of strokes that should be required for a professional to complete the hole. If you complete a Par 4 in four strokes, you are said to have made par. If you take fewer than four strokes, you are under par. And if you take more than four strokes, you are over par. That’s something you should try to avoid. The more shots you take, the higher your score. As we have explained, in golf the lowest score wins.
Bogey (+1)
One over par. You take five shots to complete a Par 4.
Double bogey (+2)
Two over par. You take six shots to complete a Par 4.
Triple bogey (+3)
Three over par. You take seven shots to complete a Par 4. (Uh oh.)
Birdie (-1)
One under par. You take three shots to complete a Par 4. That’s more like it.
Eagle (-2)
Two under par. You take two shots to complete a Par 4.
Albatross (-3)
Three under par. You take one shot to complete a Par 4. (Even among the pros, it’s rare to score an albatross. In fact it’s only happened 18 times in Major Championship history.)
Hole in one
Literally just hitting one shot and the ball goes in the hole. The magic number 1 in the score card. Similar to albatross only its done on par 3's.
Just like each hole has a par value, so too does each course. This is simply the total of the par values for each hole. Golf scoring is about the cumulative number of strokes you take as you move along the course. You tot up your shots as you go.
Courses
The playing field for golf is called a "HOLE" and each hole consists or 3 different types which is a PAR 3 hole, a PAR 4 hole and a PAR 5 hole. A golf course can only be considered as such if they have the minimum number of holes required to play golf which is 9 holes. A proper game of golf consists of playing 18 holes which will usually have a PAR of 70 to 72.
Now lets move on to terms used when describing a hole.
Tee box
The starting point of the hole where the first shot is hit to start the hole.
Fairway
An area of a closely mowned grass that is suitable to make perfect shoots on them. The goal of every golfer when they are at the tee box is to land it on this area of grass.
Rough
An area of slightly taller grass than the fairway which makes it a bit harder to hit a shot but still manageable. Best to avoid this if possible.
Bunker
A prepared area containing sand in the playing field. Usually to penalize golfers who made errant shots and makes it harder for them to score. They are mostly placed around the greens or the sides of the fairway.
Greens
The goal of the game where the flag and hole is located. The grass on the green is much finer and smoother than the fairway and resembles a pool table's carpet.
Equipment
It is time to showcase the weapons of golf! They are called golf clubs generally but they have a few different types which you can bring to play since the maximum number of golf clubs you can choose is FOURTEEN.
The Driver
The longest club in the bag literally and distance wise. When you need to blast the ball to the stratosphere this the guy you take off your bag. Usually only used on the tee box to hit towards the fairway and rarely used to hit on the fairway (though they are instances where it can be used. Can also be reffered as Wood #1.
Woods
Generally shorter than the driver in terms of length and distance and also a smaller head. Usually used when you need to hit that distance to the green but with better accuracy rather than being long.
Irons
The accuracy clubs as most golfers call them. The irons makes majority of the clubs that is in the bag because each iron has a different distance that it can travel to. These are the clubs that is responsible to put the golf ball on the green.
Wedges
Wedges were considered a part of an iron set previously but in modern golf there has been a lot of technology been put into them until they can be considered a different entity. Wedges are mostly used when you are inside a bunker or very close to the green.
Putter
The scoring club. The most important club in the bag as it sole existence is to put a golf ball into the hole thus finally ending the hole. 30% to 40% of your total strokes consists of putting strokes.
That pretty much covers all you need to know about the basic jargons used in golf. There are more in the swing side of golf but i will cover that on another post later on.
Thanks for reading for those who reached the end and ill be seeing you guys in the next post.
