First Impression of the latest Land Rover Discovery

in teammalaysia •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today marks the end of the first month in 2018, time flies really fast and I just get to know about steamit this year which symbolize a great start for the year.

Anyways, back to the main topic I am going to write about. As per the title, let’s talk about the all new Land Rover Discovery. Many of the people might have known this car for a year as it was debut globally in Sept 2016 and a full year of 2017 with the latest Discovery running about on the road.

So what’s make it special for me to mention about this car, that is because it is just introduced in my country on the early of the month by Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia. The price listed is shocking at RM730k compared with the previous gen which cost around RM 500k. I had no idea why the price is that huge amount but what I can think of is Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia wants to position it at a higher level ahead of conventional rivals like Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE.

As of today, currently there are not many local car journalist head up to the showroom and review the car. Thus, here I am writing about this car. A few days ago, I went to the Jaguar Land Rover PJ showroom to have a look at the car and I can’t believe in my eyes that the car is gone a lot looker than its predecessor. The car silhouette is sleeker with design cues taken from its smaller brother Discovery Sport.

Unfortunately, the rear design is really awkward that no one can bear with the one sided look of the number plate placement. This is due to formula taken from the predecessor split tailgate look which this current one doesn’t have that. I do hope Land Rover can start to change the rear design on the future time.

After talking about the exterior, now it’s time for the interior and dare I can say it really looks much more luxurious than the old one which makes it on par with the Range Rover (luxury arm of Land Rover). The dashboard layout is simple yet intuitive with the full touchscreen of the head unit with great clarity and pixels. However, it takes some time to get used to the operation of the navigation system. Storage is aplenty to place your items with many hidden storage like behind the climate control, a huge space down under the cup holder and also an upper glove box to store valuable items from prying eyes.

The seats are comfortable throughout the cabin from front row to the last row with sufficient head, leg & shoulder room for 6 foot tall person. One quirks I would like to share with you is the second row seats are powered folding (unfortunately the last row doesn’t have that), that sounds normal for a luxury SUV but when operating the folding function by pressing the switch on the side of the luggage area, before the second row seat is fold down, the front seats is automatically move forward to make space for the seats to fold flat. (*Mind blown) This small detail is really much appreciated as sometimes the front seats are push too far behind that affect the space for second row headrest to fold down. Climate control is available on the second and third row so everyone wouldn’t complain the scorching heat of our country during a journey.

On the oily bit, our market only comes with one powertrain which is a 3.0 turbo diesel V6 mated with 8 speed gearbox. It produces 258hp & 600Nm of torque. That amount of power really can push this 2.3 ton car forward quickly at 0-100 time of 8.1 sec with a top speed of 209km/h.

As this is a Land Rover, no one will ever doubt on its off road capability with a wide approach and departure angle to move around the rocky or muddy hill in our rain forest. Unfortunately, no one in Malaysia is going to do that stuff as the car is expensive and would just drive around the city center to show its presence only.

I would not like to talk much about the specs of the car as you can find it around on the Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia websites or brochures. I am so sorry if my pictures are blur because the phone I'm using is Samsung Galaxy J5. No test drive?

Nope, I think I'm not eligible for that haha. First impression and my age not granted.

Have to agree with you on the tailgate comment, that rear just looks so awkward :|

However, there is a company that can fix it, and it looks so much better, check them out here: https://www.startech.de/en/products/land-rover-discovery-5-5-4/

Also, nice write up!

Thanks for the compliment. Wow, I din't know there's aftermarket got the accessories solution for the ugly rear look. Anyways, thanks for sharing!

Wait till we see Range Rover Velar price tag 🙈

Yeah, we should expect something like this. But still can't wait to look at the car!
