Food Plus Addressing Food Surplus in Penang and The Launching of @Cat Food Bank

Penang has the reputation as being the "food paradise" in Malaysia and throughout world as it offers a diverse and exotic mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine, which reflects the multicultural mix of the city. It is popular among locals and tourists alike. Local Penangites mostly find these hawker fares cheaper and easier to eat out at any time of the day due to the iniquitousness of the hawker stalls all around Penang Island. Penang was recognized as having the Best Street Food in Asia by Time magazine in 2004, citing that "nowhere else can such great tasting food be so cheap". In 2013, Penang was also ranked by CNN Travel as one of the top ten street food cities in Asia. Penang has also been voted by Lonely Planet as the top culinary destination in 2014.

I myself known my friends who setup a Whatapps group titled "Free Food Movement" to inform about free food in Penang such as open house such during festive seasons Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, open houses by political parties such as Barisan Nasional, Gerakan and DAP in Penang. (I shall write about Free Food Movement in another Steemit post. Going these free events i seen this uncle who flocked for free things such as free transport, free foods and free events. I called these uncles Free Food kakis. They will always called me for free events and use me as a free transport or free " Grab" or " Uber". I couldnt avoid them cause when I tell them i am at home or at dad shop at First Avenue. They will definitely ask me to pick them up at the nearest bus stop

I myself have attended open houses by property developers like Mah Sing Group, Boon Siew Group, SP Setia and Eco World which provide good buffets which serve delicious foods such as grilled lambs and beef during CNY, tasty Malays delicacies during buka puasa at Vistana Hotel and hawker feast by DAP Christmas Celebration Open House last year and German chicken wings by Hin Bus Depot during Christmas during 2016

We as Malaysian are united by one food. However, due to the abundance of hawker foods at a cheap price, we tend to waste in. It actually came out the news on Star, that government actually encourage the rakyat to takeaways or "tapau" food surplus during large buffets during festive seasons

The food wastage in Penang is a very depressing one. Luckily, there a new startup or social enterprise in town called Food Plus by iMax Tech Solutions. Food Plus is a platform which take food surplus and resell at their online platform. It can be likes of baked goods, sushi, canned foods or drinks. Food Plus is the brainchild of Calvin Chan which help to address food wastage, give away free food to the underprivileged and poor people and food hunger and poverty of urban poor in Penang. Food Plus also donate food surplus to poor people who go to sleep every night in hunger without food. Calvin Chan is Penang Green Advocate, founder of Food Plus and was part of the Penang waste segregation task force team and as well Disted Green student.

I always lived by this quote by Margaret Mead
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead
