Living A Lie - Am I Even South African?

in teamsouthafrica •  6 years ago

Hey Steemians

As we go about our lives and think we know all we need to, just when we think we know who we are, when we think we have it all figured out we get hit with something that questions our reality. Who we are as a nation? Who we are as people? My latest discovery has shook me to my core and has me questioning if I really am a South African.

In South Africa we've come to love a beer called the Black Label, it was a symbol of strength, fortitude, the counter culture and hard work. Well mostly due to its marketing which ingrained that thought in our heads. It was and still is South Africa's favourite beer, a beer enjoyed all over the country regardless of differences.

The Carling Black Label is steeped so deep in our history, we never bothered to question its origins until now.

Turns out, Carling Black Label is Canadian!

Does that make us all Canadians now? Probably not, we would have to teach them to braai and play rugby first! But oh the lies we've been fed, this is there way to keep us drunk, give us beer bellies and make us even funnier than we already are. Damn you Canada! What are you getting out of this?

I'm told Carling Black Label, owned by the US group Molson Coors, is still available in Canada and the US and the UK. However, there is no business link with the South African beer. This does present a unique opportunity for us, to all get together regardless of our nations. We can all get together buy a 6 pack and chug it down and toast to one another.

Lol, I'm even starting to feel as if I need to visit Canada as a pilgrimage to try the original Black Label, who knows I might just have found a second home!

Lol We've been dooped! I'm starting to question all reality at this point! Atleast we still have ouma rusks to call our own!

Funny enough yes and in my case it was your (South Africa) that stole the show. Lol. We got mobile licencing in my country and one of the companies that got the license was MTN Nigeria. We were so proud of it and it felt like it was our own because they did a lot of CSR stuff. But while working in a management consultancy firm, my boss & I were to do a presentation to the top management team. On getting there, I discovered only very few of them were Nigerians, the others were South Africans and the main man was an Australian. Now that got me confused. From documents we got as regards marketing and parent office, I discovered it was in fact a South African company. That didn't change much of how I feel, their service is great and am still using there mobile line 18+ years after. Cheers.

Lol very cool story, I use MTN too! Funny how some brands just get it right and we adopt it as one of our own. I used to work for a company called Travelstart which is a swedish company that moved to SA and opened up in Nigeria I used to work on the SA, NG, TZ and KE sites mostly and people wouldn't think for a second that they're not a local company.

There are plenty of SA companies in NG multichoice too. A few friends of mine also moved up to work for Konga for a while

Sure is a popular beer, pretty potent as well, not my favourite. Did not know the history behind the name, nor where it originated.

The World is a global village with people moving around, brands appear to achieve a similar affect.

Indeed it is, with the internet and blockchain we're really making it smaller day by day. Distance is becoming less of a divide than it used to be
