A decade ago, Apple had a brilliant Mac line-up, while the Windows and Linux world stagnated struggling to cope with the Vista debacle. By and large, Mac OS X, MacBooks and Mac Pro were great products and considered the standard (but not always the best) the industry was measured by.
Since then, things have changed dramatically. Today, Apple's Mac line-up looks antiquated and boring. Sure, it gets the work done for many people, but there are far superior alternatives on the Windows and Linux side. For common usage scenarios, Windows 2-in-1s are a fabulous, delightful experience, and in my lifetime the single greatest leap forward in computing. Yes, moreso than smartphones.
It's not bad at all, the products are still very solid, just offensively uninnovative for a company of Apple's reputation. When they attempted to innovate, it ended up being an unmitigated catastrophe. When you introduce a product shouting "Can't innovate, my ass", you know things aren't quite right. That was the 2012 Mac Pro, a trash can that only tried to focus on a small footprint while abandoning everything that made the line "professional".
Filmmakers, artists, photographers and engineering designers alike - few of Apple's strongholds - abandoned the platform en masse, moving to Windows. At this stage, it seems like only developers are left standing - understandable, because none of the innovations in the PC space matter to them.
When a company as hubristic as Apple utters the word "sorry", you know this was a disaster. After 5 years of utter negligence, they announced a new Mac Pro is coming in 2018, and I really hope they go back to offering what professionals really want.
Till then, there's a brilliant new product - Apple's first truly innovative Mac since the MacBook Air back in 2007.
Finally, a product good enough for the professionals to use! There's a 8 core, 10 core or 18 core Intel Xeon for CPU. I'm willing to bet this will be the latest Skylake generation. They are taking graphics seriously too - with Radeon Pro Vega inside. These are downclocked variants of Vega, judging by the Teraflop specs. Makes sense, as efficiency would be a greater focus for the iMac Pro than outright performance. So, this is what is causing those Vega delays!
Every other spec is right on the ball - upto 128 GB ECC DDR4, 4TB NVMe SSDs upto 3 GB/s, Four USBC/TB ports as well as 4 USBA ports. An OLED display would have put it over the top, but the 5K LG-made DCI-P3 display is solid as well. Also refreshing was the presentation, which focused on things that matter instead of useless faff.
That is, of course, a lot of power cramped into a pretty compact form factor. I'm concerned about the thermal and acoustic characteristics, but I'm optimistic they'll get it right. Fairly certain the thermals will be compromised, but that's alright as you aren't constantly touching the back.
Finally, this is a Mac computer you can do high-performance work on! It's expensive, of course, with the entry level 8-core / 32 GB / Vega 56 / 1 TB variant coming in at an eye-popping $5,000. That's definitely reasonable for something professionals can use, though. As for that 8-core / 128 GB / Vega 64 / 4 TB variant? Yeah, that's going to be something ludicrous. It's also a long way away - December - and we may see a fair few alternatives by then.
To be clear, this is not the most innovative or professional AIO. The most flexible and professional would be HP's amazing upgradable Z1 AIO, which has a G3 incoming to battle the iMac Pro. The most innovative would be the Surface Studio or Dell Canvas. HP's ENVY ultrawide AIO is pretty spectacular too. But it sure is the Mac's finest moment in a decade!
This makes me cautiously optimistic that Apple hasn't given up on the Mac platform just yet. I have lost hope for the MacBook line though - it seems clear they see iPad Pro as the future of general computing.
Im considering a Hardware upgrade in the next quarter. Macbook vs azom.systems at the moment. Lets see. Their new touch feature is interesting. Altho Im not a mac user and dont have much experience with them.

Funny you mention Azom Systems - my friend's gaming blog was sent a review unit. Don't know how reliable they are, or what their support network looks like, but pretty good pricing. They are not at all comparable though, Azom and MacBook. The touch bar is useless, it's only because they couldn't put touch on the whole screen like on all Windows laptops :)

I recommended it to my buddy who did so to his. Fantastic experience on his side. The reviews online anywhere including techenclave are great about azom last I checked. They use clevo barebones I think to build their laptops and they have offered great customer service. Small outfit doing a good job. My buddy gave me rave reviews of his friends laptop. If I can save up I could consider buying it. I need an hardware upgrade anyways. @aishwarya some word on the touch bar here. :P

It's nice to see this from Apple as it did feel like they were abandoning their line of computers for professionals. While it was a far fetched hope, I was really crossing my fingers they were going to announce a touch enabled surface for the iMac Pro as a competitor to the Surface Studio.
My daughters have a Wacom tablet and it works very well, I was just hoping to be able to invest in a better Apple product that supported professional drawing on screen. It's so much more natural to draw directly on the display itself.
The iPad Pro did however catch my eye with the newer display, iOS 11 features and pen technology. I wonder if its becoming a better device for drawing as most professionals didn't recommended it for the first model of the Pro.

The word is Apple tried and failed to bring touchscreen support to macOS, so instead decided to focus on iOS with iPad Pro. Ubuntu tried the same with Unity and failed once again. That makes you realize just how brilliant Windows 10 is - one OS, one UI that scales from a phone, a tablet, 2-in-1 to desktops and workstations.
So, yes, at this point I don't think there will ever be a touchscreen Mac. Shame, really, though the desktop form factor is one where touch isn't all that crucial. Surface Studio like use cases do make it very interesting though!

$5,000 for the base spec of the iMac Pro is kinda ridiculous. The Apple tax is strong in this one. And to top it off, let's not make it upgradable. I hope nothing breaks until your warranty is up or you might as well throw it in the garbage.

Well, yes, there's a premium markup, but so there is with Surface Studio too. Unlike other products in Apple's line-up, this is the only one unique enough to justify the premium. I'm never going to buy this thing, but at least with this Mac there's a rational argument to be made.

As a rough estimate, it seems to be priced at about a 40% premium over a similarly configured Windows box, would you agree? While it is nice to see Mac isn't laying down and surrendering, it seems unlikely that this is enough to keep Mac from continuing to lose market share. The other major issue in addition to initial purchase price is the difficulty of upgrading and repairing.

To be fair, they aren't losing market share in the consumer market, it's just the professional market. As for price premium, it doesn't matter as it's a unique product. Surface Studio and HP Z1 are both very expensive too. That said, sure, you could probably build something with the same performance for half the price, if you wanted.

Other alternatives for a Mac laptop would be the Dell Xps 15 and the Idea Pad series of Lenovo. But if you don't care about price than the Surface Book of Windows is a good choice for editors in general. Personally XPS 15 is the laptop that I want to buy because of its Infinity Display.

I would argue that the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 would be a better alternative than the Idea Pad series, but yeah it great to have so many great choices.

Oh, absolutely, the new X1 is stunning. I'd spring for the X1 Yoga with OLED touch display though - might just be the best portable computer on the market!

All of this seems pretty fascinating as they are working really hard to revolutionize the technological world once again.
Though the prices of all the products is quite high, I believe they provide better quality than most of the products available in market.
Now million dollar question, what do you think about I-phone 8 64 gb?

If you want to see what a next-gen iPhone will look like, just look at the Samsung Galaxy S8. It will be nearly identical to that. There'll also be iPhone 7S or something which will be more like a refresh of iPhone 7. So there'll be three iPhones this year, probably. Either way, it's all boring stuff, as always they are only playing catch-up with iPhones.

I find myself more interested in iPad Pro. The traditional laptop form factor is pretty unusable for me now. I know a lot of people still prefer it, so it's a personal thing. They are bringing a lot of new features from Windows 10 to iOS to make it more PC-like. Of course, Windows 2-in-1s like Surface Pro or HP Spectre X2 are far more capable than iPad Pro.

Windows 2-in-1s come with real keyboards. The Surface Pro is in my opinion better than the low-travel MacBook Pro keyboard, in fact. iPad Pro is not as good though, which is why I say Windows 2-in-1s are the way to go.

I just did a post about the surface laptop and how microsoft is stepping up its design.

In the post I mention how the iMac Pro has become a forgotten line for apple, lacking innovation. I also briefly mention how the surface studio is pushing innovation for AIO. Interesting post keep up the great work!

Surface Pro, Surface Book and Surface Studio are pretty stunning devices. That said, Surface Laptop was pretty underwhelming. I guess they raised the bar so high with groundbreaking devices that just a laptop seems disappointing...

I agree, although as I have said in a few comments, if they stick to the line I think the next gen could be pretty compelling.
