Back in 2009, Samsung showed the smartphone world the path to the future by showcasing the first bendable display panel at CES 2009. Not long ago, there were rumours doing the rounds about
Samsung's Galaxy X foldable smartphone which is expected to be launched next year. Samsung seemed to have carved a neat game plan for itself, but now
another prominent player, ZTE Corporation is vying to beat Samsung at its own game by becoming the first
smartphone maker to debut a foldable smartphone.

The samsung Galaxy X prototype showed up back in 2011.The device looked chunky and awkward, but even back then it somewhat worked, remaining intact after
100,000 folds, with only a 6% drop in brightness at the center, where all the folding action happened.

Since then different prototype for a foldable smartphone as been shown by samsung but none has been released for commercial purpose.

ZTE has already announced that it is going to launch its new smartphone on October 17 and if a report from Android Authority is to be believed, we could see the arrival of the world's first smartphone with a
foldable display at the launch event.

The Chinese smartphone maker has even leaked a photo that shows a device with its display folded in two halves, both with barely-there bezels. The devicein the leaked photo is a prototype smartphone which is known by the codename "Axon Mully" within ZTE or "Axon M" once it comes out in the market. The interesting bit about the smartphone is that when it is not folded, the two halves of the phone join together to form a large 6.8 inch display with 1,920 x 2,160 resolution.

Upon its release the ZTE Axon M could well be the world's first smartphone with a foldable display. But it shouldn't be mistaken for a smartphone with a "bendable display." It is quite similar to flip-phones such as the classic Moto Razr, but with two displays on each side instead of a keypad.

Android Authority has shared pictures of this upcoming phone. The new device is codenamed Axon Multy and could launch as the ZTE Axon M. It sports dual Full HD displays and when folded, the handset looks to function as a regular smartphone
and will be sub-10-millimeter in thickness.

Expected features of the ZTE Axon M are a screens said to meet at the hinge and fold out to form a wide 6.8-inch 2,160 x 1,920 viewing surface.
Axon M will reportedly come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM. But it will fall short of standing next to flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8 or HTC U11 which feature the more powerful and efficient
Snapdragon 835. It will come with 32GB of
internal storage and a 3120mAh battery.
Instead of having a separate rear and front camera, ZTE Axon M will feature a single 20-megapixel camera that pivots to face either direction. There are no hints towards which version of Android the phone will launch with.
