Artificial Intelligence from Elon Musk’s startup OpenAI made a surprise appeara
nce at the World’s biggest Dota 2 tournament. The bot went live against the World’s best human Dota 2 players, destroying all of them.

OpenAI took the stage at the Dota 2 International Championship yesterday. It had announced putting its AI against the top human competitors. The software was able to defeat Dendi, one of the top performing Dota 2 players. OpenAI stated that its AI had been performing at the championship and it has already defeated the Pakistan-based gamer Sumail (the world’s best 1v1 player), and Arteezy (the world’s overall top player). Sumail, also a TechJuice 25 under 25, is one of the Time Magazine’s top 30 influential teenagers.

“We’ve created a bot which beats the world’s top professionals at 1v1 matches of Dota 2 under standard tournament rules. The bot learned the game from scratch by self-play, and does not use imitation learning or tree search. This is a step towards building AI systems which accomplish well-defined goals in messy, complicated situations involving real humans,” the company said in a press release.
