Veritasium youtube channel shows video of scientist Derek Muller talking about these color changing pools in the middle of the Utah desert which helps support half of Earth's people using potassium, originally called potash. He explains in depth what the substance is and it's importance and some history behind it. It has been used for many things throughout the last couple hundred years. Its quite interesting.
