Heated Pants Review: Can Your Buns be TOO Hot Crossed? (Yes They Can)

in technology •  7 years ago

I've put this off too long. With the weather warming up, it's no longer so relevant. You may recall some time ago, dissatisfied with the performance of Venture Heat's heated pant liners, I cobbled together an improved battery for them. However that just got me to thinking.

Surely something better exists by now? I only bought the liners because proper heated pants didn't exist when I last went looking. Well this time, they did. Mobile Warming makes a line of heated garments mostly intended for motorcycle use, as they run off 12 volts and can plug into either a motorcycle 12 volt socket or an included 12 volt lithium battery.

Holy moly, is the battery serious business. It's six cells! That's laptop battery territory. Even my jacket runs off 4 cell power banks, and I thought that was plenty. This battery really lasts forever, it's satisfying to finally have heated pants with such excellent battery life.

That said, they are actually too warm. As they're meant for motorcycling conditions, with cold air whipping over you, in all but the coldest outdoor conditions where you're just walking around, you're liable to get overheated in these.

That's on the lowest setting, too. Other heated garments skimp on battery and consequently only really warm you properly on the highest setting. These pants are the opposite. Even the lowest setting is slightly too much. These are heavy duty.

The battery packs include a USB port so you could charge a phone or tablet from them if you wanted. I can't imagine wanting to divert precious heating power to something like that rather than using my own separate power bank for that purpose, but it's a nice option to have.

My complaints are few, but present. First, the battery packs don't charge via micro USB. They have their own laptop style DC charging port, which means you have to use the wall wart they come with. This is an inconvenience as now I have to buy a replacement wall wart should I lose one or just want an extra for the car.

I'd rather they charge from USB so I could use my numerous solar panels (and backpack) to charge these puppies. Although maybe I can? My backpack came with a bunch of different tips, and the backpack battery has a 12v output option. This may warrant experimentation.

The other complaint is that it only warms the tops of your thighs. Namely, where cold air would be blasting you on a motorcycle. So good choice of placement. My pant liners only heated my kneecaps and the spot just above my butt, so this is an improvement in total coverage area tbh.

Do I recommend this brand? Absolutely, but only for people with heavy duty heating needs like riding a motorcycle in the winter, skiing, or other winter outdoor activities where you don't move your body enough to work up heat naturally. I want to recommend this brand full stop, but it's actually too heavy duty for most peoples' needs.

That's high praise coming from me. I love the value proposition of being able to use their garments powered either from the motorcycle battery or the pocketable one. You don't have to choose, you can have the best of both worlds. It's just overkill for all but the most bone chilling conditions.

I hope they see this and consider making a lighter, less cumbersome line of gear for the chilly months like october and november, january and february. I'd love to have a jacket and pants of this quality, with such insane battery life, but with light materials that afford easy movement.

That's the real promise of heated clothing in my book: All the warmth of a bulkier, thicker garment but at a small fraction of the bulk, thanks to the battery constantly replenishing the trapped heat. If they do release such a line, I won't be able to throw money at them fast enough.

LOL jsut the title gave me a good laugh

Battery manufacturers love him! Click to see why!
How many batteries does it take a Beyman to go outside on a midwinter day?
This post also got me thinking, I hope your entire getup has tearaway capabilities in case/for when they burst into flame. Think of it like an ejection seat, from your clothes- maybe rig something up in the backpack. You got this.

Wow! Never tought something like this even existed, and i like the design. I'm curious and i will look up some reviews. If they have something for woman and at a decent price it might come in handy and i would love to try it to see how i would feel :)

Hey, The heated pants series are back.
My buns these days are suffering from strong winter winds. I also need a heat engine to warm them up :(

I heard about heated pants for the first time. I live in a country where the temperature goes upto 50 degree in summer and if some innovations like cooling pant comes, then it will grab the attention of many people and most of above average people will definitely buy.

I ask Santa every year to send me heated pants for Christmas.
But he instead sends me nudes :(((

Wow, so innovative jeans. Is this pants already available? Unfortunately, this jeans not exist on my country this time yet.

Heated clothing device? Thats a big solution to a major challenge. There are cold times here in Nigeria. Is there a way to get your product here?

First, the battery packs don't charge via micro USB. They have their own laptop style DC charging port, which means you have to use the wall wart they come with.

For a piece like this, i find this very weird. Why it cannot be charged via micro USB?

I'd be too worried about everything lighting on fire. :)

That's pretty impressive. Both the battery size and the overall performance of the pants. How are the pants for cool weather without being turned on at all? Then if it gets colder you still have your battery fully charged. Or are you just more concerned with the bulk?

They're bulky. Think "snow pants". Not quite that bad but close. Not really suitable for anything but snowy weather.

So these pants are they reallu the expensive types? Cause I think they'd come in handy during maybe a cold weather.
And you're right, maybe a USB port where it's chargeable is the undoing
I dislike the special kinda charge pattern

Man, my fiancee would go nuts to have heated clothes like you do, lol. She was just happy with a heated scarf that runs on 4 AA's, haha. This look pretty useful for the winter months though for sure. Would be great to have these for a hiking trip or anything like that since I wouldn't wanna get overheated in them since they're so heavy duty as you described.

It sounds like an extremely efficient gadget. Unfortunately i'm not a biker, at-least not yet and also where I am from is extremely hot most of the times. I wonder how hotter it would be wearing a heated pants. Would probably feel like acting a horror movie. You know the part where some gets roasted alive? Yeah. But all the i enjoy learning about new gadgets and technology. Thanks for adding to my knowledge.

bro you must have more technology in your wardrobe then i have in my house ..i imagine those thing would have you chafing in no time😂

Just don't push any of the buttons without asking me first

hahaha and be carefull not to spontaneously combust when your fully kitted out more then Tony Stark

I love the size of the batteries. I actualy bought a heated jacket from Dewalt since I saw so many heated things you posted. The only thing that botheres me is the size of the battery and it’s actualy stack in the back, other than that I’m happy I got it. I like that you can actualy plug it to the motorcycle. It looks very convenient.

You could always get a second battery and keep it in a pocket in case it runs out while you're still outside. Also when it dies, don't throw it away. You can open those things up and replace the 18650 cells inside with higher capacity ones.

I Agree! That makes sense.
For my jacket I have multiple batteries since I can use battery from my Dewalt tools.

That is super cool. It reminds me of when I was seeing these heated jackets that were being crowd funded. Wow man if there is ever a zombie apocalypse you will be 100% prepared with all the gear you have. I know who to visit if it comes to that.

What a technology for warming up.
""Can Your Buns be TOO Hot Crossed?""😜😜
Go ahead Boss by showing the innovative Ideas..

Alex - Is this safe? If safe they are, I think I need one... :)

+W+

I've found you get by a lot better if you just warm your body up internally rather than externally. Still really neat to see all the gadgets you put together!

Annnnnd you reminded me of playing the song hot cross buns on my recorder in elementary school...nothing to do with heated pants...carry on.

is that a heater in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

Damn never even imagined there is such a thing.. I mean never thought about it and I come from a place where winters get to -20 degrees.. I wouldn't care about heavy.. will let me stick on the ice easier! :D

It is a big purchase for $299, but it is the kind of investment you thank yourself for years later when it's still doing a good job keeping you warm outside. They also make jackets that run off the same huge batteries, they last for 5-8 hours depending on setting.

Well people give a lot more money for expensive brands with less utility. The investment here is clear at least. Guess in the future clothes may have this technology implemented in them so you can wear them anywhere and cool off or warm up depending on the weather.. that'd be cool!

A whole other meaning to hot buns :)
