Talks of biased algorithms are consistently in the news, however most is discussions occur without much context or discussion regarding what it means to be "biased" in the first place. After all, when it comes down to recommendation engines and other sorts of algorithmic innovations that we interact with on a regular basis, isn't the inherent "bias" towards you as a user the whole point? For all the information that Google has on you, they don't know you perfectly, so they make assumptions about you based on people with similar profiles, be it age, race, gender, education, or other factors. Is this bias acceptable? What about when the state uses these techniques? Where does one draw the line?
