The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is the world's most powerful and has a processing power of 93 petaflops.China is already building a supercomputer that's capable of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 calculations per second and hopes a prototype will be completed this year. Despite this computing prowess, the nation is trying to do more.

Sunway TaihuLight achieving the top spot on TOP500 is a great feat, but the practicalities of using that machine have not been detailed and we will have to wait and watch if it empowers a major breakthrough.

That said, there are many problems that can use the FLOPS on offer (they are targeting CFD, BigData Analytics etc.). The new machine has an indigenous architecture and they have a set plan to port applications to ensure that the massive compute is utilized by as many domains as possible.

The US DoE has its plans and roadmap for Exascale and aims to achieve it by 2023 Paul Messina Shares Deep Dive Into US Exascale Roadmap. US still dominates a healthy share in the list and this is not a one off race, the list can be expected to churn a lot more in the coming few years.

With all this happening, it is definitely a good time for HPC as a market, and things will eventually lead to an ExaScale computer.

The truth is that the computer caused a great revolution. I remember when I was 6 years old my father had a notebook, I think a calculator was faster. But with that we started. Until today was our hoby. I am 27 years old. And not to mention the mobile phones. Computers and mobile phones totally changed people's lives. Hug bro!.

TaihuLight is currently up and running at the National Supercomputing Center in the city of Wuxi, a manufacturing and technology hub, a two-hour drive west of Shanghai. The system will be used for various research and engineering work, in areas such as climate, weather & earth systems modeling, life science research, advanced manufacturing, and data analytics.

The supercomputer was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC), the same organization that designed TaihuLight’s predecessor, the Sunway BlueLight system, which is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan. BlueLight is a 796-teraflop supercomputer, which was deployed in 2011.

BlueLight is powered by an older version of the ShenWei processor, a third-generation 16-core chip, known as the SW1600, which tops out at about 140 gigaflops. In the five years since that system came online, NRCPC developed a much more powerful processor, the SW26010, a 260-core chip that can crank out just over 3 teraflops. TaihuLight has a single SW26010 in each of its 40,960 nodes, which adds up 125 peak petaflops across the entire machine (more than 10 million cores). Linpack, of course, is going to leave some FLOPS on the table, but 93 petaflops represents a respectable 74 percent yield of peak performance.
